Rep. Brian Mast, chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, told Fox News Digital the U.S. objective in Iran is to remove Tehran's ability to strike Americans across the Middle East. He said operations aim to destroy missile and other strike capabilities and honored three U.S. service members killed in the action. Mast rejected claims that Israel forced the U.S. into conflict, saying diplomacy was attempted first while military assets were positioned as a deterrent. He also warned the crisis could reshape Iran's leadership or prompt popular unrest.

Rep. Brian Mast (R-Fla.), chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, told Fox News Digital in an interview that the United States now has a clearly defined military objective in Iran: to dismantle Tehran's ability to strike Americans across the Middle East.

Mast said the mission is "to literally eliminate every single piece of military hardware that exists in Iran that can reach out and touch an American somewhere throughout the Middle East." He added that ongoing operations are intended to prevent future attacks from surface-to-surface missiles, surface-to-air systems or any weapon that could threaten U.S. personnel and allies in the region.

"These service members understood the hazards of their profession. They went out there, conducted their duty to defend the United States of America, and I could not be more proud than to thank them for their service, and I'm proud to be their brother in arms," Mast said, paying tribute to the three U.S. service members killed in the operation.

Mast emphasized that the United States will set the scope and duration of the campaign: "The ending of this militarily for the United States is on our terms." He stressed that decisions about escalation and termination rest with U.S. civilian leadership and military planners.

Diplomacy, Readiness and Coordination

Rejecting claims that Israel forced the United States into conflict, Mast said Washington first pursued diplomacy and imposed deadlines before moving toward military action. He described coordinated work by senior U.S. officials and intelligence leaders to assemble assets and keep pressure on Iran while preparing military options.

"It didn't just happen on accident that we snapped our fingers and we had the Ford carrier group there, the Lincoln carrier group. That is something that took time," he said, arguing that carrier strike groups and other forces were positioned deliberately as part of a layered strategy of diplomacy backed by readiness.

Potential Political Fallout in Iran

Mast also discussed how the crisis could affect Iran's political future. He outlined Iran's formal succession process — a small leadership council followed by a larger assembly that would select a new supreme leader — and identified possible successors, including relatives of the current leadership and hard-line clerics aligned with the IRGC.

At the same time, Mast warned that popular unrest remains a real possibility: "That assumes that there is no uprising, where the people, the millions and millions of people across Iran, who have been just brutally tortured and suppressed, don't decide that there is another path." He said the United States would welcome a shift away from Iran's current behavior and a turning of the page for the Iranian people.

Context And Cautions

The interview reflects one congressional leader's perspective on U.S. objectives and the justification for kinetic action. Officials and analysts continue to debate the best mix of diplomacy, deterrence and force to prevent threats to U.S. personnel and allies while limiting wider escalation.
