Iranian missiles and drones struck near Dubai, producing visible smoke across the skyline and prompting shocked reactions from influencers and residents. The Fairmont Hotel was reported struck; officials said four staff were injured and a concourse was damaged. The French Embassy warned nationals as Emirati airspace remained closed and urged people to follow safety instructions. Journalists say the attacks exposed tensions between influencers' commercial obligations and the realities of regional conflict.

Influencers and residents in Dubai were jolted into a stark reality check after Iranian missiles and drones struck near the Emirati city, sending plumes of smoke across its skyline and prompting widespread alarm among foreign nationals and social media creators.

From early Saturday, videos posted by foreigners showed smoke rising above Dubai's skyscrapers and fallout from intercepting rockets. Israeli wellness influencer Hofit Golan repeatedly exclaimed "OMG!" while filming a nearby building on fire. British creator Will Bailey captured trails of smoke and interceptor rockets near the Fairmont Hotel — a site that was reportedly struck — saying, "That was metres away from us." French reality-TV star Maeva Ghennam, brandishing her passport, said she "screamed hysterically" and appealed, "France, protect us!"

Impact and Official Response

Officials said the incident injured four staff members and damaged a concourse. Emirati authorities temporarily closed the country's airspace, and the French Embassy in the UAE advised nationals that departures were not possible while airspace remained closed. The embassy urged French citizens to "strictly follow the safety instructions: stay at home (and) keep away from windows, doors and open areas."

'Back To Reality' For A Luxury Bubble

Dubai has become a magnet for influencers, entrepreneurs and wealthy migrants drawn by a business-friendly environment, no personal income tax and conspicuous luxury lifestyles. The city — home to nearly four million people, roughly 90% of whom are foreign residents — also hosts one of the world's busiest airports.

Journalist Emma Ferey, author of the novel Emirage, described the attacks as a "back-to-reality" moment for influencers who had assumed the city was insulated from regional conflict. She noted that many content creators are contractually obliged to continue posting sponsored material, even during crises, a behavior that can appear jarring when viewers see scenes of violence and fear.

Some influencers tried to reassure followers: real estate consultant Deepti Mallik, speaking from a crowded beach, said she felt the country takes residents' and tourists' security seriously. Other creators voiced anger at commentators who celebrated the attacks; French influencer Benjamin Samat condemned those rejoicing at the distress of French nationals living in Dubai.

Context And Caution

Iran said the strikes were in retaliation for a recent wave of US-Israeli attacks, a claim that contributes to a complex regional context. Media reports and official statements should be read alongside ongoing updates from authorities. Residents and visitors are advised to follow local guidance and official safety instructions while the situation develops.
