At Least 9 Dead, 81 Missing After Heavy-Rain Landslide Buries Homes in West Java

The early-morning landslide in Pasirlangu Village, West Bandung (West Java) on Jan. 24 was triggered by heavy rain at about 2:30 a.m. Authorities confirm nine dead, 81 missing and 23 rescued; roughly 34 homes were buried, with Pasir Kuning among the worst-hit areas. BASARNAS and local SAR teams have been deployed and continue recovery operations amid challenging conditions. The BNPB has urged vigilance and is coordinating with local authorities as rain warnings remain in effect.

A severe landslide triggered by heavy overnight rain struck Pasirlangu Village, Cisarua, in West Bandung, West Java, at about 2:30 a.m. local time on Saturday, Jan. 24. Local and national search-and-rescue teams say the slide buried scores of homes and left a large number of residents unaccounted for.

Rescue Efforts Underway

Indonesia’s National Search and Rescue Agency (BASARNAS) posted an update on Facebook saying an advance SAR team was immediately deployed to the scene. Ade Dian Permana, head of the Bandung SAR Office, led the initial response. By mid-afternoon local time, local outlet Pos Kota reported nine confirmed dead, 81 people missing and 23 found safe.

Local authorities and rescue teams say roughly 34 houses were buried, with the hamlet of Pasir Kuning among the hardest hit. SAR spokesperson Abdul Muhari told ABC News,

"The number of missing persons is high; we will try to optimize our search and rescue efforts today."
Officials have not yet publicly released the identities of those killed or still unaccounted for as they continue to verify reports from the ground.

Coordination and Weather Warnings

The landslide follows several warnings issued by Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) about heavy rain and flooding across parts of the country. The BNPB said it is strengthening coordination with local ministries, regional governments and police to ensure that disaster management is effective, measurable and sustainable.

Search-and-rescue teams continue operating amid difficult conditions, working to recover victims and secure the area while verifying casualty figures. National and local agencies, along with news outlets such as ABC News and Pos Kota, are providing updates as officials refine their counts and assessment of the damage.
