Student Critically Injured As Gunman Dies By Apparent Suicide In Stewartville High School Parking Lot

A student at Stewartville High School in Stewartville, Minnesota, was critically injured early on Dec. 12 after an adult man opened fire in the school's parking lot and later died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, officials said.
What Happened
Olmsted County deputies were dispatched to the high school at about 5 a.m. after reports of a shooting near a bus that was preparing to take the school’s wrestling team to a meet. About 40 members of the wrestling team were on the bus and reported hearing two gunshots.
Coaching staff found a male teenager on the pavement with a gunshot wound. He was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital and taken directly into surgery. On Friday afternoon, sheriff's officials said the teen remained in critical but stable condition.
Authorities also found an adult man on the ground with what investigators believe was a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The adult was pronounced dead at the scene.
Response And Investigation
Students were reunited with family members after the incident. School counselors and district staff were deployed to support students, coaches and families. Olmsted County Sheriff Kevin Torgerson described the event as very rare for the community and said it was an emotional time for responders.
“This incident has impacted far more than just the families involved. This will be a difficult time moving forward,” Sheriff Kevin Torgerson said.
Law enforcement said they are continuing their investigation and are in contact with the families of both the injured teen and the adult who died. Several Minnesota lawmakers, including State Senator Carla Nelson, issued statements offering condolences and praising the quick response of first responders.
Authorities have not released additional details about a motive or the identity of the adult. The investigation remains active as officials work to gather more information and support the affected community.
