World Cup Draw and a High-Profile Guest

The draw for next year’s World Cup begins at 12 p.m. ET today and is expected to attract a global television audience. President Donald Trump is scheduled to attend the ceremony at the Kennedy Center alongside a lineup of athletes, musicians and political figures.

U.S. Naval Strike Kills Four

The U.S. military carried out a strike on a suspected drug-smuggling vessel in the Eastern Pacific that killed four people on board, the U.S. Southern Command said. The vessel was operating in international waters and reportedly carried illicit narcotics. The action is part of an administration campaign called Operation Southern Spear, which has targeted 23 suspected drug boats and is linked to at least 87 deaths so far. President Trump has signaled plans to escalate operations against cartels and has repeatedly said the military may soon strike targets inside Venezuela.

Supreme Court Clears New Texas Congressional Map

The Supreme Court cleared the way for Texas to use newly redrawn congressional maps that heavily favor Republicans — a major development ahead of next year’s midterm elections. Under the redistricting, Texas Republicans could gain as many as five additional House seats. Meanwhile, redistricting fights continue nationwide: the Justice Department recently sued California officials over maps critics say advantage Democrats, and a court will hear that challenge next month.

Putin in India, Firm on Donbas Demand

Russian President Vladimir Putin is in India for high-stakes talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi as New Delhi balances trade ties with the U.S. and historic relations with Moscow. Speaking to Indian media ahead of the summit, Putin said Moscow would seize Ukraine’s Donbas region "by military or other means." One of the Kremlin’s chief demands to end the war has been that Ukraine cede territory in the Donbas — territory Russia claims to have annexed but has not fully controlled — a position Kyiv has rejected and that complicates prospects for a negotiated settlement.

FBI Arrests Suspect in Jan. 6-Eve Pipe-Bomb Case

The FBI arrested 30-year-old Brian Cole Jr. in Virginia on Thursday in an investigation that spanned nearly five years into who left pipe bombs outside the Republican and Democratic National Committee headquarters the night before the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot. Authorities say Cole amassed bomb-making supplies for months and left viable explosive devices just a few blocks from the U.S. Capitol. The suspect is expected to appear before a federal judge today; a conviction would close a long-running probe that produced few leads for years.

Several Countries Withdraw From Eurovision Over Israel Decision

Spain, Ireland, Slovenia and the Netherlands announced they will withdraw from next year’s Eurovision Song Contest after organizers decided Israel may compete. Organizers met amid calls to exclude Israel because of the war in Gaza and threats of boycotts. They opted not to hold a vote on participation but said they would introduce "targeted changes" to improve neutrality. Israeli President Isaac Herzog welcomed the decision and thanked supporters.
