Ten people were injured when a vehicle drove into a crowd in Newcastle, Australia, on Saturday morning, authorities said. Two of the victims remain in critical condition.

Incident Overview

The crash occurred at about 9:30 a.m. local time as spectators lined the street for a send-off procession for the Newcastle Knights following the rugby team's grand final, local media reported. The scene was near Newcastle Link Road, roughly 100 miles north of Sydney.

Casualties and Response

Of the 10 people hurt, two — a 5-year-old girl and a 67-year-old man — were taken to hospital and remain in critical condition, New South Wales police said. Other victims, including another 5-year-old girl and a 2-year-old child, were transported to hospital and reported to be in stable condition. The ages of the other injured ranged from 24 to 63.

Police officers, traffic patrols and paramedics responded quickly. Several people received on-scene treatment from paramedics, and multiple victims were taken to hospital.

Arrest, Road Closures and Investigation

New South Wales police arrested the driver, an 18-year-old, at the scene. Authorities closed Newcastle Link Road in both directions, disrupting the planned procession route. Police said the incident is under active investigation.

Newcastle Mayor Gavin Morris told ABC News Australia that early information suggested the driver had been revving the vehicle before losing control and driving sideways into the crowd. Authorities are working to confirm the circumstances and any possible charges.

Newcastle Knights statement: "Our thoughts are with everyone impacted by the incident, including those at the scene and their families."
