Lance Corporal George Hooley, 28, was killed after sustaining multiple injuries in an explosion on 6 December 2025 and died in a Kyiv hospital three days later. An inquest held partly in private recorded his death as resulting from an explosion and "not suspicious," though investigators said they had limited evidence about the circumstances. The Ministry of Defence described the incident as a "tragic accident" while Hooley was observing Ukrainian forces test a defensive capability. Hooley joined the Parachute Regiment in 2016 and was transferred between Ukrainian hospitals before his death.
British Paratrooper Killed By Explosion In Ukraine, Coroner Rules

A coroner has concluded that Lance Corporal George Hooley, a 28-year-old British paratrooper, was killed by an explosion while assisting Ukrainian forces. An inquest held partly in private found he "sustained multiple injuries from an explosion" on 6 December 2025 and died in a Kyiv hospital three days later.
Inquest Findings
Darren Salter, senior coroner for Oxfordshire, told the court that it had been provided with "limited evidence" about the circumstances surrounding the blast but recorded that Hooley's death was "not suspicious." The precise location of the explosion remains unknown, other than that it occurred away from the frontline.
Medical Transfer and Official Statements
The coroner's report says Hooley was transferred from at least one other hospital in Ukraine before being moved to a Kyiv facility where he later died. In December the UK Ministry of Defence described him as "an exceptional soldier and an impressive junior leader with extensive operational experience," calling his death a "tragic accident" that happened while he was "observing Ukrainian forces test a new defensive capability." The MoD declined to provide further comment when asked for additional details.
"A born soldier"
Hooley's company commander in the Parachute Regiment paid tribute to him, saying the 28-year-old was "a born soldier" who showed "a rare gift: a deep kindness and genuine time for everyone."
Hooley, from Wallingford in Oxfordshire, joined the Parachute Regiment in June 2016 after completing training at the Infantry Training Centre Catterick in North Yorkshire.
Context
The UK government has not disclosed the exact number of military personnel in Ukraine, but has acknowledged a small contingent is present to support Ukrainian forces and protect diplomatic staff. After almost five years of conflict the frontline remains largely static, with neither side making decisive gains. Russia currently controls an estimated 20% of Ukrainian territory, including large parts of Donetsk, and efforts to resume peace talks have stalled amid accusations that President Vladimir Putin has rejected proposals for trilateral negotiations involving Russia, the US and Ukraine.
