Tacoronte had arrived in Mexico in mid-August as part of an academic exchange from the University of Granada to the Autonomous University of the State of Morelos (UAEM), where she was enrolled in early-childhood education courses. She visited Cuautla to attend a festival centered on medicinal plants.
Investigation and Possible Motive
Authorities are exploring several lines of inquiry, including an attempted robbery, though no definitive motive has been announced. Local outlets reported that witnesses claimed emergency services took 30 to 40 minutes to arrive; those accounts are based on residents' statements and had not been corroborated with official emergency logs at the time of reporting.

Pattern of Violence Linked to UAEM
Tacoronte is the fourth female student connected to UAEM to be killed or found dead after disappearing since February. Other victims cited by local and Spanish media include:
- Kimberly Ramos, 18, an accounting student who disappeared Feb. 20 near the UAEM Chamilpa campus; her body was found on March 2.
- Karol Toledo, 18, who disappeared March 2 in Mazatepec and was found three days later in Coatetelco.
- Michelle Itzayana Fuentes Calderón, 15, a high-school student enrolled in a UAEM program who vanished May 24; her body was found June 2 in Tepoztlán.
Official figures cited by Reuters indicate Morelos recorded 21 femicides from January through July, while Mexico registered 380 femicides during the same period.
Responses and Repercussions
UAEM president Viridiana Aydeé León expressed the university's "profound indignation" and sorrow for Tacoronte's family. Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares said his office is in contact with the student's family and called for those responsible to be brought to justice: "We want to get to the bottom of this." Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said federal authorities are assisting the investigation.
Students at UAEM held a silent vigil demanding justice and stronger protections for female students. The University of Granada observed a minute of silence and announced it canceled three exchange placements that had been scheduled for Morelos next semester.
