Russian overnight strikes on Kyiv and surrounding areas killed 16 people and injured more than 40, damaging homes, a school and a children's hospital. Ukraine reported 168 drones were launched and said nearly 90% were downed; it did not disclose how many ballistic missiles were fired or intercepted. President Zelenskiy urged allies to urgently replenish Patriot interceptors to defend cities, and EU leaders called supplying anti-ballistic capabilities a top priority. The attacks also hit Odesa's port region and damaged food logistics, worsening export disruptions.
Russian Overnight Strikes Kill 16 in Kyiv Region; Zelenskiy Urges Urgent Delivery Of Patriot Interceptors

Russian air and drone strikes killed 16 people and wounded more than 40 in Kyiv and its surrounding region on Thursday, Ukrainian officials said, in one of the largest attacks in recent weeks. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy warned that a shortage of Patriot interceptors — used to counter ballistic missiles — is costing civilian lives and urged allies to replenish stocks immediately.
Widespread Overnight Assault
Ukraine's Air Force said Moscow launched a large-scale overnight attack involving dozens of cruise missiles, ballistic and hypersonic missiles, and 168 drones. The service reported that nearly 90% of the drones and the majority of cruise missiles were shot down, but it did not provide figures for how many ballistic missiles were launched or whether any were intercepted.
The upper floors of a nine-storey residential block in Kyiv's Solomianskyi district were destroyed; Mayor Vitali Klitschko said most of the 15 deaths in the capital occurred there and called for Friday to be observed as a day of mourning. Two other districts also suffered damage, with a school and a children's hospital among the struck buildings, alongside non-residential facilities and warehouses.
Targets, Damage And Wider Impact
Moscow's defence ministry said the strikes hit facilities producing drone components, a military depot and a logistics hub around Kyiv, among other targets. Ukrainian authorities reported damage to food warehouses and Red Cross facilities, and said attacks on logistics depots have intermittently emptied supermarket shelves of fresh fruit and vegetables in the capital.
The raids also struck the Odesa region on the Black Sea, worsening recent disruptions to port exports that have already constrained Ukraine's agricultural shipments and put upward pressure on global food prices.
Cross-Border Incidents And Retaliation
Russian regional officials in Tatarstan reported a disruption at an industrial complex in Nizhnekamsk after what they described as a Ukrainian drone attack; some residential apartments were damaged. Ukraine's General Staff said its forces struck the TANECO oil refinery and an oil terminal in Russia's Krasnodar region. During the same period, Romanian authorities said a drone crashed into NATO and EU member Romania, and Moldova's president reported a drone fell on Moldovan territory.
Political And Diplomatic Fallout
Zelenskiy renewed public appeals for more Patriot interceptors, writing on Telegram: "The interceptors for Patriot systems have not yet been replaced, and they are needed every day. Each additional missile saves the lives of our people." He argued that without adequate missile defences, meaningful negotiations with Moscow for a ceasefire are unlikely.
EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen responded on X that she is coordinating with member states and partners to prioritise delivery of anti-ballistic capabilities to Ukraine.
Ukraine has also shared peace proposals with U.S. intermediaries Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner; Russia's Foreign Ministry said it had not received detailed proposals but would be ready to meet at short notice. Witkoff and Kushner last visited Moscow in January and have not yet travelled to Kyiv.
Human Cost: The physical destruction of homes, a school and a children's hospital, and the damage to food logistics, underline the continuing civilian toll and wider humanitarian effects of the conflict.
