Moscow officials say a wave of drone strikes overnight involved 620 drones heading toward the capital, with about 180 reportedly shot down over the Moscow area. The figures come from Mayor Sergei Sobyanin and state media TASS but have not been independently verified. Authorities reported no immediate, confirmed casualties or damage. The incident follows near-daily drone attacks on the Moscow region amid the wider Russia–Ukraine conflict, in which Ukraine has increasingly relied on inexpensive drones alongside cruise missiles.

Moscow and the surrounding region were targeted overnight by a large wave of drone strikes that Russian state news agency TASS described as the most intense in two years. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin told TASS that 620 drones flew toward the capital between Monday evening and Tuesday morning. Officials say most were intercepted and about 180 were shot down over the Moscow area.

These numbers come from Russian authorities and TASS and have not been independently verified. There were no immediate, confirmed reports of casualties or damage from this latest incident.

Context

Russian officials say Ukraine has conducted near-daily large-scale drone strikes on the Moscow region in recent days. Sobyanin previously reported that roughly 600 drones targeted the area overnight into Sunday, an attack authorities say killed one person and injured several others.

Broader Conflict Dynamics

Since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, both sides have struck targets across the frontiers: Russia has used ballistic and cruise missiles, glide bombs and drones against Ukrainian cities, while Ukraine—backed by some Western military support—has increasingly relied on cruise missiles and relatively inexpensive, rapidly produced drones to strike targets inside Russia.

What Remains Unclear

Independent verification of the scale and effects of these strikes is limited. Current reporting is based on statements from Russian officials and state media; independent sources may confirm further details as investigations proceed.
