SEOUL — Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi will visit South Korea from August 19 to 20, the South Korean Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday. The trip marks Wang's first official visit to Seoul in five years and is aimed at advancing bilateral ties ahead of key regional meetings later this year.

Planned Meetings

On Thursday, President Lee Jae Myung will receive Wang at the Blue House to discuss bilateral relations and regional affairs and to convey greetings to Chinese President Xi Jinping, the presidential office said. Wang is also scheduled to meet National Security Adviser Wi Sung-lac for talks and a luncheon, where both sides are expected to exchange views on South Korea–China relations, developments on the Korean Peninsula and other regional and international issues.

Upon his arrival on Wednesday, Wang will hold talks and attend a dinner with Foreign Minister Cho Hyun.

Context And Purpose

The Foreign Ministry said the visit precedes the APEC summit in Shenzhen in November and is intended to review progress in restoring ties and prepare for the next stage of high-level exchanges between the two countries. Observers expect the meetings to help set the agenda for cooperation and address security, economic and diplomatic concerns in the region.
