Attorney General Todd Blanche drew criticism after joining former President Donald Trump at a Long Island rally to endorse Republican Bruce Blakeman for New York governor. Blanche, who was confirmed to the role last weekend and has served as Acting AG since April, pledged vigorous prosecution for assaults on federal officers. Critics called his attendance inappropriate and cited alleged pardons of violent Jan. 6 defendants to accuse him of hypocrisy. The episode has renewed debate about the proper boundaries between the Justice Department and partisan politics.

Attorney General Todd Blanche faced swift online criticism after appearing Friday at a rally hosted by former President Donald Trump on Long Island to endorse Republican Bruce Blakeman for governor of New York.

Trump brought Blanche and FBI Director Kash Patel to speak to an audience of law enforcement officers at an event supporting Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman, the Republican nominee. Trump emphasized Blanche’s recent confirmation, noting that Blanche had been confirmed to the post just the previous weekend. Blanche has served as Acting Attorney General since April, following President Trump’s decision to fire Pam Bondi amid a dispute over the handling of FBI files related to Jeffrey Epstein.

Critics quickly flagged Blanche’s appearance as problematic, saying it risked blurring the lines between the Justice Department and partisan politics. MSNBC columnist Michael A. Cohen wrote on X, "It's beyond inappropriate for the Attorney General even to attend a political rally." Commentator Chuck Todd also weighed in with a quip referencing former Attorney General Merrick Garland and New York Governor Kathy Hochul: "Trying to remember what Merrick Garland's rally speech was like for Kathy Hochul in 2022…"

Blanche’s Promise From the Podium: While speaking at the rally, Blanche vowed, "If anybody touches a federal law enforcement officer in any way inappropriate, we will prosecute them to the fullest extent of the law."

That pledge prompted further criticism on social media, with opponents accusing Blanche of hypocrisy. Representative Don Beyer (D-VA) pointed to pardons Blanche oversaw, saying they involved violent Jan. 6 defendants who injured police officers — a charge Blanche’s supporters dispute and which has become a focal point in the debate over his fitness for a politically visible role.

Legal and ethics experts say the episode has reignited questions about how senior Justice Department officials should avoid appearing to take partisan positions. Supporters of Blanche argue that attending an event with law enforcement personnel is consistent with his role, while critics say endorsing or appearing at a partisan rally undermines public confidence in the department’s neutrality.

The appearance and ensuing online reaction underscore tensions around the Justice Department's political independence, especially when top officials attend highly partisan events alongside elected political figures.
