King Charles and Queen Camilla Express Deep Sympathy After Devastating 7.4-Magnitude Earthquake in Colombia

King Charles and Queen Camilla have offered their heartfelt condolences after a powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck western Colombia, causing widespread damage and heavy loss of life.
In a joint statement released late on Tuesday, the monarch — who signed the message "Charles R." — said he and the Queen were "dreadfully saddened" by the "tragic loss of life and suffering" caused by the quake. He added: "At this most difficult of times, our special thoughts are with the bereaved and injured, those awaiting news of family and friends and the emergency responders working tirelessly to support those in need."
"We greatly admire the resilience and strength of the Colombian people, and we send our deepest sympathy and heartfelt condolences during this most challenging and distressing period." — King Charles R.
Authorities located the epicentre near the village of San José del Palmar. The quake was felt in Manizales, Cali and Pereira, and tremors reached neighbouring Ecuador and Panama. It struck shortly after 7:30 a.m. local time (1:30 p.m. UK time).
Local reports say the death toll has risen to more than 250 people and more than 3,800 are reported missing as search-and-rescue teams continue operations through the day and night. In response to the scale of the disaster, the Colombian government has declared a national disaster to coordinate relief and recovery efforts.
The tragedy has prompted messages of solidarity from European royals and world leaders. Spain’s King Felipe and Queen Letizia and Monaco’s Prince Albert and Princess Charlene are among those who have publicly expressed sympathy and support for Colombia.
