Crash Details
Police said officers and firefighters found the vehicle on the hillside; all five occupants were pronounced dead at the scene. Initial investigation indicates the vehicle was traveling southbound on Lookout Lane when it veered off the roadway and down the steep incline of the hillside, the department said in a statement Sunday.
"Our hearts are heavy following the tragic losses this weekend," the Grand Junction Police Department said.
The Mesa County Coroner's Office said Monday that all five teens died from injuries sustained in the crash. According to the coroner, the driver, the front-seat passenger and a third occupant were wearing seatbelts; two other occupants were not restrained and were ejected from the vehicle.
Speed is being considered as a possible factor in the crash, which remains under investigation. First responders from multiple agencies worked at the scene to recover the victims, the coroner's office said. The coroner identified the victims only as 17-year-old residents of Grand Junction and declined to release names because of its policy regarding minors.
Authorities asked anyone with information about the crash to contact the Grand Junction Police Department as investigators continue to piece together the circumstances that led to the fatal incident.
