On June 29 a stolen Audi S5 was pursued by Durham Constabulary at speeds reported up to 140 mph. The coupe struck a police Audi Q7 during the chase but was ultimately boxed in and both occupants arrested. Officers found keys to at least five other vehicles inside the car; the 17-year-old driver has pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and burglary, with sentencing set for October.

A high-speed pursuit on June 29 in the United Kingdom ended with the arrest of a 17-year-old driver after a stolen Audi S5 was chased at speeds reported up to around 140 mph. Durham Constabulary released dashcam footage showing multiple patrol cars keeping close contact with the coupe before bringing the incident to a controlled stop.

The Pursuit

Officers were alerted after reports that a black Audi S5, believed to be stolen, was being driven dangerously. When officers tried to stop the vehicle at a large roundabout, the teenage driver sped off instead, triggering a lengthy pursuit through several towns and local roads.

Durham Constabulary deployed two BMW 3 Series Touring patrol cars and a BMW X5 to keep pace with the S5. Despite the Audi's 4.2-liter naturally aspirated V8—rated at roughly 354 horsepower—coordinated police tactics and multiple units prevented the driver from opening a decisive gap.

Collision and Arrest

During the chase the S5 struck the rear of an Audi Q7 police SUV in an apparent attempt to break away. The impact damaged the coupe's front-right corner and produced visible smoke, but the collision did not allow the suspects to escape. Officers regrouped, boxed the S5 in, smashed the side windows, and removed both occupants before taking them into custody.

A search of the vehicle reportedly uncovered keys to at least five other vehicles—including two additional Audis, a BMW, a Mercedes-Benz and a Ford—and several house keys. Investigators say the discovery suggests the stolen S5 may have been linked to additional thefts.

Charges And Next Steps

Police confirmed the 17-year-old driver has pleaded guilty to multiple offences, including dangerous driving and burglary. Sentencing is scheduled for October, when the court will determine penalties related to the pursuit and associated offences.

Why It Matters

The incident underlines how coordinated policing, persistence and multiple patrol units can limit the risks posed by high-speed offenders—even those behind powerful cars on paper. The chase created a dangerous situation for the public, and authorities stress that fleeing police at extreme speeds endangers everyone on the road.

What do you think? Should penalties be tougher for drivers who flee police in stolen vehicles at extreme speeds, or are current laws sufficient? Share your thoughts in the comments.
