John James, a two-term Republican congressman, appears to have defeated self-funding businessman Perry Johnson in Michigan’s GOP governor primary, aided by an endorsement from Donald Trump. Johnson spent about $30 million on the race but failed to overcome James’s statewide profile. James is likely to face Democratic frontrunner Jocelyn Benson in the general election, and his decision to run for governor puts his southeast Michigan House seat at risk this November.
Trump-Endorsed John James Fends Off $30M Self-Funded Challenger in Michigan GOP Primary

Two-term U.S. Rep. John James (R-Mich.) appears to have prevailed in the Michigan Republican primary for governor, defeating self-funded businessman Perry Johnson with the help of a high-profile endorsement from former President Donald Trump.
Race Details
James, 45, benefited from statewide name recognition after two prior runs as the GOP nominee for U.S. Senate (2018 and 2020) and from Trump’s backing, which remains influential with many Republican primary voters. Johnson — a businessman who built a quality-control consultancy — poured roughly $30 million of his own money into the contest, using advertising that sought to cast James as part of the political establishment and labeled him a “DEI candidate.” Johnson previously ran for Michigan governor in 2022 and spent about $26 million on a short 2024 presidential bid before dropping out and endorsing Trump.
Despite that spending, Johnson was unable to overcome James’s existing profile across Michigan. James had earlier acknowledged that Joe Biden won Michigan in 2020, but in a recent appearance alongside Trump he echoed the former president’s false claim that Trump won the state in 2020.
What Comes Next
James is expected to face the likely Democratic nominee, Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, in the general election. His decision to run for governor leaves his southeast Michigan House seat — which he has held since 2023 — open and competitive, creating a potential pickup opportunity for Democrats in November.

Takeaway: Trump’s endorsement and James’s name recognition overcame heavy self-funding by Johnson, but the gubernatorial bid shifts the political calculations for Michigan’s congressional map this fall.
