Alleged Crime: Sharif Ahmadzai, 26, has been charged in the killing of 38-year-old volunteer Elisabeth-Jane Ross, whose body was found in a suitcase outside Athens on July 15. Investigators say Ahmadzai allegedly used a burner phone to send texts posing as a jihadist to mislead the victim's contacts and withdrew money from her account. He is charged with murder, robbery and illegal possession of a firearm and is due before an Athens judge. The probe remains ongoing and the suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
Athens Suitcase Murder: Afghan-Born Suspect Allegedly Posed As Jihadist Using Burner Phone

Sharif Ahmadzai, 26, has been charged with the murder of Elisabeth-Jane Ross, whose body was found inside a suitcase on the outskirts of Athens on July 15. Greek authorities say Ahmadzai allegedly used a disposable phone to send messages pretending to be a jihadist in an apparent effort to mislead the victim's contacts.
Discovery And Investigation
Ms. Ross, a 38-year-old Christian volunteer from Edinburgh, was discovered in an abandoned building outside Athens on July 15. Medical reports cited by investigators indicate she died from asphyxiation. CCTV footage shown by Greek media reportedly captures a man matching Ahmadzai's description pushing a suitcase through Athens.
Allegations About The Burner Phone
Prosecutors allege Ahmadzai used a burner phone to send texts to Ms. Ross's friends, to his wife and even to himself, purporting to be from a jihadist claiming responsibility for the killing and asserting the motive was religious. Authorities stress these are allegations under investigation.
Financial And Physical Evidence
Investigators also say thousands of euros were withdrawn from Ms. Ross's bank account. Ahmadzai allegedly offered his wife, Alaina Hall, €2,550 and a new Apple iPhone 17 Pro, which she handed to police after suspecting the items were purchased with the victim's money. A pistol was reportedly found at Ahmadzai's home.
Possible Motive And Police Comments
Police sources quoted by media have suggested a potential motive that Ms. Ross rebuffed Ahmadzai's sexual advances, though officials have not confirmed a definitive motive and say the investigation remains active. George Kalliakmanis, head of an Athens police union, was quoted saying the suspect had gone to the victim's flat "for a reason," and that nothing can be ruled out.
How The Suspect Was Identified
Ahmadzai became a focus of the probe after his wife, Ms. Hall, reported worrying behaviour and checked a shared location on July 15 that placed him at Ms. Ross's apartment. The couple co-ran the NGO Love Every Nation Athens, through which they and Ms. Ross had met.
Background And Legal Proceedings
Ahmadzai, who fled Afghanistan as a teenager and arrived in Lesbos in 2016, reportedly converted to Christianity in 2017 and married Ms. Hall in April 2023. He is now charged with murder, robbery and illegal possession of a pistol and is expected to appear before an Athens judge.
Note: The allegations described here are based on Greek media reports and statements from investigators; Ahmadzai is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
