25-Year-Old Carpentry Student Killed, Another Injured in Targeted Shooting at Oakland Adult School

A 25-year-old woman was fatally shot and a second person wounded during a targeted attack at the Parker Community Resource Center in Oakland, California, on Friday, July 31.
The Oakland Police Department said the shooting occurred at about 9 a.m. at the center, which houses the Oakland Unified School District's adult school and the Roots Community Health Center. Officers who arrived on the scene found two people in their 20s with gunshot wounds. First aid was administered at the scene; one victim later died and the other was taken to a hospital in stable condition.
Investigators described the incident as targeted and "not a random act," but as of the initial briefing had not identified a suspect or announced a motive. Oakland Police Chief James Beere told reporters investigators had "good leads" and that he was confident they would determine who was responsible and why.
“I'm very confident we'll be able to determine the reason and the people responsible,” Chief James Beere said at a news conference.
Family members speaking with local media identified the slain woman as Kimarii McLemore, 25, who was enrolled in the school's carpentry program. Her relatives told reporters McLemore had previously had a dispute with another person in a class.
"When she started, [there] was somebody in there that she didn't get along with… she said they had conversed and they had squashed it," her aunt Brittia Johnson told KTVU. Johnson said she received a call from McLemore's mother after the shooting in which the mother said, "They killed my baby."
About 20 people were on campus when the shooting occurred. Oakland Unified School District officials said the campus was immediately locked down and that counselors and support services were made available to students and staff. "This kind of tragedy should never happen anywhere, especially not on a school campus," the district said in a statement.
McLemore's family remembered her as a respected member of the community. Her brother, Tyriq Long, told KTVU that people had a lot of reverence for her and that she often brought good energy to those around her.
The Oakland Police Department has asked anyone with information or video of the incident to contact investigators. As of Aug. 1, police had not publicly named a suspect and had not provided a motive. Local outlets reporting on the incident include KTVU, ABC7 and NBC Bay Area; the initial summary of events was also covered by PEOPLE.
