Great white shark Percy

Percy, a subadult great white tagged by OCEARCH and the Tancook Islands Marine Field Station on July 28, 2025, pinged about 14 miles off Ocean Beach, New York, on the one-year anniversary of his tagging. He has traveled roughly 4,660 miles since being tagged and measured 9 ft 9 in and weighed 432 lb at tagging. Percy was the sixth shark tagged during OCEARCH's 2025 summer residency; his tracked movements give researchers insight into seasonal migration and behavior of young white sharks.

Percy, a subadult great white shark, has pinged roughly 14 miles off Ocean Beach, Long Island, continuing a seasonal movement likely toward cooler northern waters.

Tagged on July 28, 2025, by OCEARCH in partnership with the Tancook Islands Marine Field Station off Nova Scotia, Percy has made an extensive coastwise trek — ranging from Canadian waters down into the Gulf and back up the U.S. East Coast.

Tracking Details

According to OCEARCH tracking data, Percy has covered approximately 4,660 miles since his tagging. At the time he received his tag he measured 9 feet, 9 inches long and weighed 432 pounds. Percy was the sixth shark instrumented during OCEARCH’s 2025 summer residency field research program.

On Tuesday — exactly one year after he was tagged — Percy transmitted a location about 14 miles off Ocean Beach, New York. In less than a day he moved from waters off Sea Isle City, New Jersey, to the Long Island coast, demonstrating the rapid coastal transit young white sharks can make.

Why Researchers Are Watching

OCEARCH scientists say Percy's movements provide valuable data on the seasonal migrations and behavior of subadult white sharks. Tracking animals like Percy helps researchers understand habitat use, migration corridors and how younger sharks respond to changing ocean conditions.

Public Tracking: Members of the public can follow Percy and more than 400 other tracked ocean animals in real time via the free OCEARCH Global Shark Tracker app.

About OCEARCH: OCEARCH is a global nonprofit organization that researches and advocates for the protection of sharks, whales, sea turtles and other marine life. The organization uses tagging and telemetry to monitor migration patterns and behavior remotely and share data with scientists and the public.
