Summary: Iran said it launched a drone strike on US facilities at Kuwait's Ahmad Al-Jaber airbase in apparent retaliation for US strikes that hit Qeshm island and killed three. CENTCOM reported it struck dozens of IRGC-linked targets in Iran earlier in the week. The exchanges have coincided with missile interceptions, attacks in Jordan, Kuwait, Egypt and Iraq, and assaults on shipping in the Red Sea and Caspian Sea, raising fears of wider regional escalation.

Iran said on Friday that its forces struck United States military facilities at Kuwait's Ahmad Al-Jaber airbase with drones, calling the action retaliation for US strikes a day earlier. Washington had not immediately confirmed the reported damage or casualties.

What Happened

According to a statement carried by Iran's semi-official Tasnim news agency, Iran's army said the drones hit hangars, satellite communications equipment and storage warehouses at Ahmad Al-Jaber. Iran framed the operation as a response to a US attack on a residential building on Qeshm island that reportedly killed three people.

The US Central Command (CENTCOM) said earlier in the week that it had struck dozens of targets linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) inside Iran. Explosions were reported across several Iranian provinces after those strikes. The IRGC vowed retaliation.

Wider Regional Incidents

Over the past 24–72 hours, the confrontation has produced a string of incidents across the Middle East and nearby waters:

  • Jordan said its air-defence systems intercepted several ballistic missiles launched from Iran.
  • Kuwait reported one worker killed after an attack struck a building used by a Chinese company; China said no Chinese citizens were harmed.
  • Egypt confirmed a drone strike at the port of Damietta damaged two ships; Iran denied involvement and warned against false-flag operations.
  • Attacks and interceptions have also been reported in Iraq, and a drone strike struck a camp used by an Iranian Kurdish opposition group east of Erbil.
  • Shipping has been targeted in the Red Sea and Caspian Sea. Yemen's Houthi movement, aligned with Iran, has declared a blockade of Saudi ports and attacked vessels in the Red Sea since July 20.
  • A Ukrainian strike on an Iranian-linked commercial vessel in the Caspian Sea prompted Tehran to summon Ukraine's diplomatic representative, while Ukraine said it was targeting ships used for alleged military cargo transfers.

Analysts' Take

Tehran appears to be widening the geographic scope of its responses to deter further US-led operations, while Washington's strikes represent intensifying pressure on Iranian military targets, analysts say.

Burcu Ozcelik of RUSI warned that continued tit‑for‑tat strikes risk a broader regional confrontation if a direct attack prompts a collective Gulf response or if groups such as the Houthis further escalate in strategic choke points like the Bab al‑Mandeb.

Current Status

Independent verification of the reported strike on Ahmad Al-Jaber and the full scale of damage remains limited. Multiple governments and military commands have issued statements or taken defensive actions, but the situation is fluid. Diplomacy involving Gulf states continues alongside military messaging and operations.

Note: Where possible, the report attributes claims to the parties that made them (Iranian agencies, CENTCOM, national defence ministries). Some details remain unconfirmed by independent sources.
