Overview: President Trump warned of strong U.S. retaliation after Iran launched missile and proxy attacks that prompted joint U.S.-Saudi strikes in eastern Iraq. CENTCOM said ballistic missiles aimed at U.S. forces were intercepted, while the PMF reported at least 20 killed in the strikes. Market and energy impacts followed: oil prices jumped and U.S. stocks fell. The Fed left rates at 3.50%–3.75% amid three dissenting votes, and Washington imposed new sanctions targeting Iranian insurance firms and a shadow tanker network.

President Donald Trump on Wednesday warned the United States would respond forcefully to recent Iranian attacks on American forces, saying on Fox News that Tehran "will get a beating" as the five-month conflict intensifies.

Escalation Across the Region

Jordan's military reported intercepting a salvo of missiles launched from Iran, and U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) said it thwarted an "attempted surprise attack" by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), with all missiles reportedly intercepted. CENTCOM also announced that U.S. forces, in coordination with Saudi Arabia, carried out strikes late Tuesday against Iran-backed militias in eastern Iraq, which it described as targeting "terrorist logistics and weapons sites."

The Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF), an umbrella for Iran-aligned Shiite militias in Iraq, said at least 20 fighters were killed and 32 wounded in the joint U.S.-Saudi strikes. Iranian-linked Sabreen News published images it said showed coffins draped in Iranian flags and described the dead as Iranian advisers; those claims were not independently verified.

Regional Reactions

Iraq's National Security Council condemned the strikes as violations of Iraqi sovereignty and convened an emergency meeting. Harakat al-Nujaba, an Iran-allied militia within the PMF, denounced the attacks and threatened retaliation, calling on Baghdad to sever ties with Riyadh and expel U.S. forces.

Maritime and Energy Concerns

London-based Inchcape reported an explosion at Egypt's Damietta Port near the Suez Canal at an LNG terminal during cargo operations; vessels were relocated and authorities partially closed the facility while operations were expected to resume at other berths. Maritime-security firm Ambrey reported at least one drone struck a U.S. LNG storage facility at Damietta, though no group immediately claimed responsibility.

Houthi forces in Yemen—aligned with Iran—have stepped up attacks in the Red Sea and announced a blockade of Saudi Red Sea shipping. Yemen's Information Minister accused the Houthis of working with IRGC advisers to impose fees on commercial vessels transiting the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandab Strait, a move he called a dangerous escalation. Reuters has reported that Iran moved IRGC commanders and missile and drone equipment to Yemen in recent weeks.

Sanctions and Economic Impact

The U.S. Treasury and State Department imposed new sanctions targeting two Iranian insurance firms—the Persian Gulf Marine Insurance Company and Hormuz Safe Marine Services Authority—alleging IRGC backing and schemes that extort international shipping. Washington also designated eight companies it said were part of a "shadow fleet" transporting illicit Iranian crude and petrochemicals.

Markets reacted to the heightened geopolitical risk: Brent crude rose sharply (as high as $87 a barrel in some trading), U.S. crude climbed above $81, and major U.S. indices were lower—S&P 500 and Nasdaq down modestly and the Dow off more sharply during the session—as investors weighed oil-supply risks.

Federal Reserve Decision

The Federal Reserve left its benchmark interest rate unchanged in the 3.50%–3.75% target range, marking the fifth consecutive meeting without a change. The last rate move was a 0.25 percentage-point cut in December 2025. Three of the 12 Federal Open Market Committee voting members dissented, an uncommon split that analysts say signals pressure among some policymakers to act on inflation sooner if energy-driven price pressures persist.

Operational Security Concerns

CENTCOM warned U.S. service members that real-time cellphone and social-media posts could reveal sensitive information and potentially aid Iranian targeting. Admiral Brad Cooper urged forces to "redouble our focus on operational security," cautioning that open-source intelligence from social media could have life-or-death consequences.

Diplomacy

A White House meeting between President Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was described as "extremely positive" by an Israeli official, with both leaders reaffirming a commitment to preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. Mr. Trump made dismissive comments about one alleged Iranian site, saying he already understood the issue.

Key Facts: CENTCOM says Iranian missiles were intercepted; U.S. and Saudi forces struck Iran-backed positions in Iraq; at least 20 PMF fighters reported killed; Damietta LNG terminal suffered an explosion and possible drone strike; new U.S. sanctions target Iranian insurance firms and elements of a shadow tanker fleet.
