Firefighters are battling a fast-moving wildfire on Paros that has forced evacuations and led officials to direct people to nearby beaches. Reinforcements from Naxos, Syros and the mainland have joined operations, with the village of Agkairia reported as especially threatened. Aerial water-bombing paused overnight and resumed at dawn; hot, dry conditions and strengthening winds are complicating containment. Greece has expanded its firefighting capacity in recent years, including aircraft, personnel, drone bases and satellites to improve detection and response.

Firefighters are battling a fast-moving wildfire on the Aegean island of Paros that has forced the evacuation of several communities as flames spread across the Cyclades.

Current Situation

Emergency services instructed residents to move to nearby beaches, and authorities initially reported no confirmed injuries or destroyed homes. Dozens of firefighters have been working on Paros since Tuesday, with reinforcements requested from the neighbouring islands of Naxos and Syros and from the Greek mainland. Local newspapers Proto Thema and Kathimerini said the village of Agkairia was particularly at risk.

Air And Ground Response

Water-bombing aircraft and helicopters suspended operations overnight and resumed at daybreak to support ground crews. Ground teams and aerial assets are coordinating containment lines where wind and terrain allow.

Weather And Fire Conditions

Officials said the blaze is being driven by scorching summer temperatures, very dry vegetation and strong winds that are hampering containment efforts. Forecasts indicated winds could strengthen further on Wednesday, raising the risk that the fire could spread more rapidly.

National Preparedness

In recent years Greece has expanded its firefighting capacity following severe blazes. The fire service now operates 85 state-run firefighting aircraft and fields around 18,000 permanent and seasonal personnel. More than 100 drone bases have been established in high-risk zones to spot fires early, and four satellites dedicated to monitoring drought-prone regions support situational awareness.

Wider Risk And Other Incidents

A high wildfire risk warning was in force across multiple parts of the country. Firefighters were also deployed to tackle blazes in the north-eastern Evros region on Tuesday. The second-highest warning level applied to Crete and the islands of Lesbos, Chios, Samos, Ikaria and Psara, while a level-three warning covered the Athens region and the north-eastern Peloponnese.

Authorities continue to urge residents and visitors in affected zones to follow official guidance and avoid the areas where firefighting operations are under way.
