Opening statements were streamed on Court TV, jurors saw hospital photos, and the trial is expected to continue for several weeks.
Patrick Clancy Breaks Down on Stand as Ex-Wife’s Murder Trial Opens

Patrick Clancy, the ex-husband of Massachusetts mother Lindsay Clancy, became visibly emotional on the opening day of her murder trial as he described the couple’s three young children on the witness stand.
Courtroom Testimony and Allegations
Prosecutors say Lindsay, 36, killed her children — Cora, 5; Dawson, 3; and eight-month-old Callan — on Jan. 24, 2023. Authorities allege that she asked Patrick to pick up takeout and a prescription that day and then used exercise bands to strangle each child inside the family home in Duxbury, Massachusetts.
Emotional Opening Day
On July 27, the trial opened in a Plymouth County courtroom and was streamed live on Court TV. Patrick, who was the commonwealth’s first witness, choked up and struggled to breathe as he recounted memories of his children. His testimony set an emotional tone for the proceedings, and Lindsay was seen crying in the courtroom as the events were described to jurors.
Charges, Defense And Evidence
Lindsay does not dispute that she killed the children but contends she was experiencing severe postpartum psychosis and was overmedicated, arguing she is not guilty by reason of insanity. During opening statements, prosecutors laid out their case that the killings were intentional and warrant first-degree murder charges. Plymouth County Assistant District Attorney Shanan Buckingham described the alleged acts to jurors:
"One by one, [Clancy] grabbed exercise bands around each one of the kids' necks and pulled until their little bodies were limp and lifeless."
Jurors were also shown graphic hospital photos of Lindsay after an apparent suicide attempt in which she reportedly jumped from a second-story window; she is now partially paralyzed. Defense attorneys signaled they will present medical and psychiatric evidence aimed at explaining her mental state at the time of the deaths.
What’s Next
