The trial of Lindsay Clancy opened with testimony from her ex-husband that her mental health "spiraled" in December 2022, a month before the January 2023 deaths of her three children. Prosecutors say the killings were intentional and have charged her with three counts of first-degree murder; she faces life without parole if convicted. The defence argues Clancy suffered psychosis — possibly postpartum psychosis — and was not criminally responsible. The trial will include testimony from medical experts, first responders, family and friends as jurors weigh intent against severe mental illness.

Warning: This story contains distressing details, including discussion of attempted suicide.

Lindsay Clancy, a Massachusetts mother accused of killing her three young children in January 2023, was described by her former husband as having become "very depressed" and on a worsening mental-health trajectory in the months before the deaths, jurors heard on the opening day of the trial.

Ex-Husband's Account

Patrick Clancy, the prosecution's first witness, told the jury that December 2022 was when he observed a pronounced decline in Lindsay Clancy's condition. He said she lost weight, withdrew from others, and began expressing suicidal thoughts. He also testified that she had changed psychiatrists because earlier treatment "wasn't working," and that she had taken various prescription medications as she sought help.

Prosecution's Case

Prosecutors say Clancy "knew exactly what she was doing" and acted intentionally and deliberately. Assistant District Attorney Shanan Buckingham told jurors the evidence will show Clancy acted "intentionally, rationally, and swiftly to accomplish a very specific goal — to kill." Clancy faces three counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of Cora (5), Dawson (3) and Callan (8 months). If convicted on those counts, she could receive life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Defense Case

Clancy's attorney, Kevin Reddington, argued the defendant suffered a psychotic episode at the time of the killings and is not criminally responsible. He described Clancy as a devoted mother who had no motive to harm her children and said she had not received adequate medical treatment. As part of its presentation, the defense showed jurors photographs including a bloodied butcher's knife, wounds on Clancy's neck and wrist, and an image of her intubated in hospital after an apparent suicide attempt.

Postpartum Psychosis And Context

Reddington told jurors the case should be viewed through the lens of severe mental illness, including postpartum psychosis — a rare but serious psychiatric emergency that affects roughly 1 in 1,000 new mothers, according to the UK National Health Service. Symptoms can include hallucinations, delusions, extreme mood swings and confusion; experts will testify about the condition during the trial.

What To Expect Next

The trial is expected to last several weeks. Both sides plan to call law enforcement officers, firefighters, family members, friends and medical experts to support their competing narratives: the prosecution aiming to establish intent and deliberation, and the defense raising an insanity/mental-illness defense.
