The United States and Iran remain locked in repeated exchanges of strikes despite June negotiations aimed at a ceasefire, with the Strait of Hormuz a central flashpoint. President Trump met privately with senior advisers to consider possible escalation while U.S. forces disabled multiple ships and struck a target near the Iraq–Iran border. The Pentagon confirmed Staff Sgt. Angel Rampersad was killed in the July 17 attack in Jordan and was posthumously promoted. Omani-mediated talks in Tehran continued as Iran renewed drone and missile activity across the region.

President Donald Trump has held closed-door meetings with senior advisers to weigh possible responses to Iran as exchanges of strikes continue across the Gulf and neighboring countries. Large-scale U.S. and allied strikes earlier this year, diplomatic efforts in June and renewed hostilities have left the strategic Strait of Hormuz a central flashpoint.

Diplomacy Amid Hostilities

An Omani diplomatic delegation visited Tehran for talks described by Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baqhaei as "fruitful," with both sides exchanging views on principles and operational mechanisms to manage safe shipping traffic in the Strait of Hormuz while respecting coastal sovereignty. Baqhaei said the delegation departed Saturday evening but that technical and political consultations were continuing.

US Deliberations And Military Actions

According to two sources, President Trump convened senior advisers at the White House to consider whether to significantly expand military action against Iran. When asked by reporters, Trump said: "As you know, we're locked and loaded. We're locked and loaded and ready to go, but we're talking to them." The meeting was first reported by The New York Times.

U.S. military forces have disabled multiple vessels attempting to break a maritime blockade reimposed on July 14; U.S. officials said a fifth ship was disabled on Friday. U.S. forces also carried out a strike on a security building near the Shalamche border crossing on the Iraq–Iran frontier, which U.S. officials identified as a legitimate military target. The structure was reported to stand roughly eight meters inside Iranian territory, adjacent to the Iraqi border.

Casualties And Confirmations

The Pentagon confirmed the identification of remains recovered after an Iranian strike on a U.S. base in Jordan. The Armed Forces Medical Examiner System identified Staff Sgt. Angel Rampersad, 28, of Ozone Park, New York, who is believed to have been killed in action on July 17, 2026, at Muwaffaq Salti Air Base. Rampersad and three other service members killed in the attack were posthumously promoted, the Pentagon said.

Regional Escalation And Claims

Regional governments reported continued Iranian-launched projectiles and drones. Kuwait, Jordan and Bahrain confirmed they faced aerial attacks: Kuwait reported hostile drones, Jordan said its air defenses shot down missiles and drones, and Bahrain reported intercepting multiple aerial threats. Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed drone strikes against U.S. assets in Kuwait and, according to Iranian state media, asserted it had struck an Amazon data center in Bahrain; these claims have not been independently verified.

Allies And International Contacts

Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is scheduled to visit Washington at President Trump's invitation, with a White House meeting planned and attendance at a high-profile funeral also expected. Diplomacy and back-channel consultations are reportedly ongoing even as military exchanges and maritime enforcement actions persist.

Situation status: fluid. U.S. and regional officials warn of further incidents as blockade, counterstrikes and diplomatic efforts continue to shape developments across the Gulf.
