Iranian agencies Defapress and Tasnim reported that an oil tanker struck a sea mine and exploded in the Strait of Hormuz, saying the ship had left the designated lane and had its radar switched off.

No additional details — including casualties or the vessel’s identity — have been released, and CENTCOM and UKMTO have not confirmed the report.

The strait is a critical route for global energy shipments, and any reported incident there carries significant commercial and geopolitical implications.

Iranian state-linked outlets reported on Sunday that an oil tanker struck a sea mine and exploded in the Strait of Hormuz.

Defapress and Tasnim, news agencies close to Iran’s military and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), said the vessel had deviated from the designated shipping lane and that its radar was switched off prior to the incident. The agencies provided no further operational details.

Neither the US Central Command (CENTCOM), which oversees military operations in the region, nor the UK maritime reporting body UKMTO had confirmed the incident at the time of the reports.

The Strait of Hormuz is a vital chokepoint for global energy shipments. Iran enforces a prescribed passage for commercial vessels and asserts broad control over the waterway, making any reported security incidents in the area a matter of international concern.

Officials or independent authorities have not yet released information on casualties, the vessel’s identity, ownership, flag or environmental impact. Further verification and investigation are expected.

Why This Matters

An explosion in the Strait of Hormuz could disrupt shipping, raise insurance and security costs for tankers, and escalate regional tensions if the incident is confirmed and attributed. International maritime authorities typically investigate such reports to establish cause and responsibility.
