Michelle Jones, a St. Louis street department worker, discovered an infant abandoned in a car seat in the middle of Goodfellow in July 2026 and stayed with the child until police arrived. Officers later arrested 36-year-old Christopher Pearson, who faces charges including first-degree endangering the welfare of a child and resisting arrest. The infant was unharmed, and Jones said her instincts compelled her to intervene.
St. Louis Street Worker Rescues Infant Abandoned in Busy Roadway

A St. Louis street department worker sprang into action in July 2026 after finding an infant abandoned in a car seat in the middle of a busy roadway. The quick response likely prevented a tragic outcome, and police later arrested a suspect in connection with the incident.
Michelle Jones, an employee of the St. Louis Street Department, was driving northbound on Goodfellow when she encountered a blue vehicle stopped in a roundabout. As she approached, the driver exited, lifted a car seat and left it in the center of the road before driving away, according to police.
When Jones walked over to the abandoned carrier she realized it was not empty. She saw tiny feet in white socks and immediately called the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department while staying with the infant to make sure the child was safe.
Jones—who is a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother—parked her work truck next to the car seat, checked on the baby and waited for officers to arrive. "Your motherly instincts kick in," she said. "I wouldn't have done anything different but to stop and make sure that baby was safe and placed back home."
"I just thank God I was there to save him," Jones added.
Police later located and arrested 36-year-old Christopher Pearson. He is charged with first-degree endangering the welfare of a child and resisting arrest. If convicted on the child-endangerment charge, he could face up to seven years in prison. Authorities have not publicly confirmed whether Pearson is related to the infant.
The incident was reported by FOX 2 St. Louis. Local officials and community members praised Jones for her quick thinking and decisive action that kept the child safe until officers arrived.
