Emergency crews in Ottawa County, Michigan, found eight people — two adults in their 40s and six children aged 5 to 15 — dead inside a Grand Haven Township home on July 25 after extinguishing a fire. Officials say some victims sustained gunshot wounds; autopsies were scheduled to determine cause of death. Investigators, including police and fire units, believe the victims were family members and are investigating a possible murder‑suicide.

Grand Haven Township, Mich., July 25 — Emergency crews discovered eight people dead inside a burning home on Friday, and investigators say some victims sustained gunshot wounds.

Ottawa County police and fire personnel responded to the residence after calls about smoke in the area. Officials said the first report came at about 8:30 a.m., and responders did not find an active fire at that time. Around 11:40 a.m., additional calls reporting white smoke prompted crews to return; after extinguishing the blaze, they found two adults and six children deceased inside the house, local stations WZZM-TV and WOOD-TV reported.

The two adults were described as being in their 40s, while the children ranged in age from about 5 to 15 years old. Authorities said the victims are believed to have been family members who lived at the property.

"Units made entry inside to battle the fire because there was smoke showing from the residence," Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office Capt. Jacob Sparks said at a news conference, according to The Guardian. "When they got inside, they noticed that there were several people deceased inside the home. Some of the victims did have gunshot wounds."

Autopsies were scheduled for Monday to determine the causes and timing of death. Investigators from both police and fire departments are working the case, and authorities say they are exploring whether the deaths could represent a murder‑suicide, though no definitive cause of death had been released at the time of the reports.

Officials have asked anyone with information about the house or suspicious activity in the area on Friday morning to contact Ottawa County law enforcement. Local news outlets cited in initial reports include WZZM‑TV, WOOD‑TV and The Guardian; the original dispatch was reported by UPI.
