How MAGA Figures Shifted Toward Ukraine: Laura Loomer’s Visit and the Drone Tech Turning Point

Laura Loomer, a prominent MAGA influencer, publicly reversed her earlier indifference to the Ukraine war after visiting shelters and bombed sites in Kyiv and interviewing President Volodymyr Zelensky. Her turnaround mirrors a broader shift among some MAGA figures, influenced by evidence of Russian assistance to Iran and Ukraine’s advances in drone and AI warfare. U.S. Army Secretary Dan Driscoll’s praise of Ukraine’s Delta drone network and new U.S.–Ukraine drone cooperation have helped reframe Kyiv as a technological partner rather than merely an aid recipient.

Admitting you were wrong can take courage. For prominent MAGA influencer Laura Loomer, that admission came after a night in a Ukrainian bomb shelter and visits to bombing sites in Kyiv — including a firebombed McDonald’s and a church hit by a drone. Her public reversal this week, capped by an interview with President Volodymyr Zelensky in the presidential garden, is one of the clearest signals that parts of the MAGA movement are changing their stance on the Russia–Ukraine war.

Posting to nearly two million followers on X, Loomer described her first experience of an air raid: "Sirens blaring. This is every day for every Ukrainian." She said her earlier comments that she "didn’t care" were unkind and argued that Americans need "moral clarity."

From Provocation To Engagement

Earlier this week, Ms. Loomer interviewed Mr. Zelensky in the garden of the presidential palace. In that conversation the Ukrainian leader said a private encounter with Donald Trump on the sidelines of Pope Francis's funeral in April 2025 marked a meaningful breakthrough in their personal rapport. Observers say that a growing number of MAGA influencers are now skeptical of Russia's peace overtures and more sympathetic to Ukraine’s struggle.

Influencers And Officials Change Course

Other right‑wing figures have also shifted. Two years ago Tim Pool labelled Ukraine an "enemy of this country" and urged the U.S. to withdraw aid; on Friday he publicly urged Mr. Trump to support Ukraine’s fight, calling the conflict one for the country’s very survival.

At the same time, policy-makers inside the administration have been persuaded by battlefield developments. U.S. Army Secretary Dan Driscoll, after a recent trip to Kyiv, praised Ukraine’s advances in drone warfare and battlefield AI integration. Reportedly impressed by Ukraine’s so‑called Delta system — a modular command‑and‑control architecture that links drones, sensors and shooters into a single network — Driscoll described the system as "absolutely incredible," conceding that the U.S. had no close equivalent.

From Aid Recipient To Technological Partner

That assessment has reframed the relationship: Ukraine is increasingly seen not only as an aid recipient but as a technological partner. The U.S. has opened talks on purchases and joint production of unmanned aerial vehicles with Ukrainian firms; six Ukrainian companies were recently granted permission to export roughly 100 drones each to the U.S. for military testing.

Intelligence revelations tied to the Iran conflict also shifted perceptions. Western agencies found evidence that Russia shared drone technologies, tactics and imagery with Tehran, which has implications for U.S. forces and regional security. Mr. Zelensky has said Ukraine’s intelligence possesses "irrefutable evidence" of Moscow’s cooperation with Iran, and both the CIA and the Trump administration have acknowledged such contacts.

Political And Strategic Implications

By amplifying claims about Russia–Iran ties and showcasing battlefield innovation, Kyiv and its allies appear to have persuaded some MAGA voices that Moscow poses a larger threat than previously believed. Ms. Loomer echoed this narrative on social media, accusing the Kremlin of aiding Iran. What once looked like a potential abandonment of Ukraine by its most important ally now appears to have reversed: sixteen months after a highly public spat between Mr. Trump and Mr. Zelensky, MAGA influencers are among those pushing for closer ties between the two leaders.

Whether this shift endures will depend on battlefield developments, domestic politics, and the tangible benefits of U.S.–Ukraine technological cooperation. For now, visits to shelters, bombed sites and frontline units — and the demonstration of integrated drone networks — have provided compelling reasons for a change of heart among some in the MAGA movement.
