Ukraine is continuing to strengthen its 1,084-kilometer (673-mile) border with Belarus more than four years after Russian forces launched attacks from Belarusian territory. Sections of the frontier are closed to civilians and protected by anti-drone netting, razor wire, concrete anti-tank obstacles and mines. Kyiv says Belarus deactivated Russian relay stations that extended drone reach, and officials report no current Russian troop buildup in Belarus but are keeping defenses in place as a precaution. Locals say the fortifications bring both anxiety and reassurance.

More than four years after Russian forces used Belarusian territory to launch an assault on Kyiv, Ukraine continues to reinforce the frontier it shares with Minsk. What was once a busy crossing is now a quiet, heavily defended strip of land closed to civilians.

Roads along the 1,084-kilometer (673-mile) border are in many places draped with anti-drone netting. The landscape is dominated by long belts of razor wire and rows of concrete anti-tank obstacles known as "dragon's teeth." Large swaths are sealed off and dotted with mines.

Reporters who visited parts of the northern border earlier this month documented the latest upgrades after a recent spike in tensions prompted Kyiv to demand that Belarus deactivate communications relay stations Russia had installed to extend the range of drones striking Ukrainian cities. Ukrainian officials say Belarus complied and that rhetoric between Kyiv and Minsk has since cooled.

While Ukrainian authorities report no current sign of a renewed Russian troop buildup inside Belarus, they emphasize that strengthening the frontier remains a priority. Ukrainian border guards maintain 24-hour patrols using armored vehicles, drones and layered surveillance systems, and officials say additional defensive measures will be added as a long-term precaution because Belarus is Moscow's closest military ally.

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has repeatedly said he will not commit Belarusian forces to the war unless his country is attacked. Nevertheless, people living near the border say the possibility of Belarus becoming more directly involved in Russia's offensive remains a persistent source of anxiety.

Local Impact and Outlook

For many residents the fortifications are a stark reminder of the conflict's early days; for others they are a source of reassurance that Ukraine is preparing for a range of contingencies. Officials stress that the defensive posture along this frontier is intended to deter aggression and protect civilians.
