Idaho Man Allegedly Broke In, Tried to Rape and Strangle Woman — Claimed He Only Wanted to 'Cuddle'

Idaho Falls — A 39-year-old man has been charged after a woman says he broke into her home in the early hours and attempted to rape and strangle her, police and local reports say.
According to East Idaho News and court documents, the incident occurred at about 3 a.m. on July 16. The victim told investigators she woke to find Tyler Humphries standing over her bed with his pants down. She said Humphries told her he "was going to rape her until she told him the truth," then allegedly climbed on top of her and attempted a sexual assault.
When the woman screamed, the report says Humphries covered her mouth and began strangling her. She managed to break free and fled to a nearby room where a child was sleeping. The victim wrapped the child in a blanket and confronted Humphries, who allegedly shoved the child into a wall before fleeing the residence.
Responding officers observed bruising on the woman's thigh, and she reported that her throat "felt like it was burning." She was taken to a hospital where doctors determined her airway was at risk of closing. Authorities have not released details about the extent of the child's injuries.
Humphries returned to the home later that morning and was arrested. Officers say they found marijuana and a glass pipe commonly associated with methamphetamine use in his possession. According to the report, Humphries initially told investigators he had only been trying to "cuddle" with the woman before later admitting to the assault.
Humphries faces multiple charges including attempted rape, attempted strangulation, domestic violence battery and burglary. He has not yet been assigned a public defender and no bond has been set. If convicted, he could face up to 52.5 years in prison and fines totaling as much as $163,000. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for July 31.
