Satellite images and reporting show Israel building an earthen berm and trench inside Gaza that extend well beyond the US-backed "yellow line" from the October 2025 ceasefire. The barrier measures more than 23 km and reaches up to about 1,300 m past the line in places, cutting through devastated communities. Palestinians confined to crowded coastal camps fear they will not be able to return as roads, bases and proposed outposts reinforce Israeli control. Israeli forces say they are building a physical barrier, while critics warn the temporary line risks becoming a permanent border.

Satellite imagery and reporting indicate the Israeli military is constructing a long earthen barrier — an earth berm paired with a trench — deep inside the Gaza Strip, extending well beyond the US-backed temporary demarcation known as the "yellow line." The works have intensified Palestinian concerns that the line could become a lasting separation of territory.

Barrier Scale and Location

According to Haaretz and the AP, the earthworks now exceed 23 km (about 14 miles) in length across Gaza, which itself is roughly 40 km (25 miles) long. In Khan Younis the berm reaches roughly 400 metres past the yellow line, and near Rafah it extends up to about 1,300 metres (4,260 feet) beyond that demarcation.

Local Impact and Military Development

The barrier cuts through neighbourhoods where homes, infrastructure and agricultural land were destroyed during the war that began in 2023. Israeli forces have also built new roads and established bases on the ruins of towns, moves that have heightened Palestinian fears they will be unable to return to their former lands. Some Israeli officials have publicly discussed establishing outposts in parts of Gaza.

"I intend to establish three Nahal outposts, which is also a military entity, in those places that were in northern Gaza," Defence Minister Israel Katz told Channel 14.

Humanitarian Situation

Many Palestinians are now confined to crowded tent camps along the coastal area west of the yellow line, where they face shortages of aid and basic supplies and remain vulnerable to ongoing airstrikes. Reports say Israeli forces have fired on people approaching or crossing the demarcation; the military states it targets individuals believed to be militants threatening troops, but casualties have included civilians.

Official Statements and Ceasefire Context

When asked about the satellite imagery, the Israeli military said it was constructing a physical barrier near the yellow line. The October 2025 ceasefire agreement envisioned the yellow line as a temporary boundary while Israeli forces withdrew to Gaza's edges and an international presence took over security. Critics say the current works and bases risk turning the demarcation into a de facto permanent border.
