‘Banned’ Trump Interview Sparks Diplomatic Row — Meloni Vows “Italy And I Do Not Beg”

President Donald Trump said during a phone interview that Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni "begged" him for a photo at the G7 summit in Evian-les-Bains. LA7 published the interview as a transcript after alleging the White House barred release of the original audio. Meloni quickly denied the claim, calling it "completely fabricated" and insisting, "Italy and I do not beg." The episode has strained relations among allies in the wake of the G7 meeting.

President Donald Trump ignited a diplomatic dispute after telling an Italian broadcaster that Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni "begged" him for a photograph at the 52nd G7 summit in Evian-les-Bains, France. The comment came during a phone interview that LA7 says it published only as a written transcription after the White House barred release of the original audio.

LA7's White House correspondent Daniele Compatangelo says the White House gave "precise directives" that "the calls are not disseminated with original audio but simply transcribed," so the network posted the correspondent's questions and transcriptions of Mr. Trump's replies.

Trump: "I’m not involved with it. We just want to have peace. How is your Prime Minister doing? How is she doing?"

Compatangelo: "Well, she just met you at the G7. What do you make of it? What do you make of the conversation that you had sitting on the little couch?"

Trump: "What did she say when she met me?"

Compatangelo: "I guess she was happy to meeting you and to have a friend like you?"

Trump: "Probably she is happy that I talked to her! I didn’t have to talk to her!"

Compatangelo: "Tell me about the meeting?"

Trump: "I don’t know what to say! She begged me for a picture! She wanted a picture with me so badly. I wouldn’t have done it, but I felt sorry for her!"

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni issued a swift and scathing rebuttal, calling the president's account "completely fabricated" and saying she was "frankly stunned." Her statement, published in Italian and accompanied by an English dub by LA7, also criticized Trump for perceived softness toward geopolitical adversaries and concluded bluntly: "Italy and I do not beg."

The exchange underscores tensions among allies following the G7 meeting and raises questions about access to full interview materials when presidential staff set restrictions. LA7 and Meloni’s office released related materials; the account first appeared on Mediaite.

What To Watch

This incident could deepen diplomatic friction between the U.S. and Italy if it shapes public perceptions or prompts formal protests. Observers will be watching for any follow-up statements from the White House, LA7's release of additional material, or further clarifications from Meloni's office.
