‘They did it again’: Texas GOP brings a real elephant to a convention - as people believe another Simpsons prediction has been fulfilled

Viral Moment: A live elephant named Paige was paraded through the Texas GOP convention in Houston and urinated on the convention floor, footage that quickly spread online.

Simpsons Resonance: Many social media users compared the scene to a 1994 episode of The Simpsons in which an elephant marches through a political convention.

Aftermath: Critics ridiculed the stunt and raised animal welfare concerns, while the Texas GOP framed Paige's appearance as a lighthearted moment and Governor Greg Abbott used the event to call for unity ahead of the midterms.

A live elephant named Paige was paraded through the Texas Republican Party convention at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston on Friday, a spectacle that went viral after the animal urinated on the convention floor. Reporters and attendees filmed Paige as she walked near the press area wearing a feathered hat and a banner that read 'Unity Drives Victory.'

The footage quickly dominated online conversation, with many users drawing parallels to a 1994 episode of The Simpsons, "Bart Gets an Elephant," which depicts an elephant strolling through a political convention. Social posts included clips of the episode and comments such as "The Simpsons did it again."

Political reaction was immediate and polarized. The Texas Democratic Party posted on X that the stunt was "the perfect metaphor for the Texas Republican Party," while other critics called the event "poetic justice" or a public relations fiasco for the GOP.

Animal welfare concerns were raised by commentators and journalists. Political commentator Brian Tyler Cohen criticized the use of animals as props, and reporter Yashar Ali warned that the loud, crowded environment likely stressed the elephant, citing elephants' sensitivity to smell and sound.

Paige is reportedly owned and handled by the East Texas Elephant Experience, based in Cut and Shoot, Texas. The organization lists Paige at roughly nine feet tall and approximately 8,600 pounds, and says it offers educational programs and participates in research aimed at improving conditions for elephants in human care.

Governor Greg Abbott, who is seeking a fourth term, delivered a keynote address at the convention and used the event to urge unity ahead of the November midterms. "Unity is going to drive victory this November," Abbott told delegates, according to The Texas Tribune. He added, "Together, we will demolish the Democrats. Together, we are going to win in November. Together, we are going to keep Texas, Texas."

The Texas GOP posted a lighter note on X: "Welcome Paige! Thanks for stopping by the State Convention! What a treat for our delegates and guests - it’s one they won’t ever forget!" The Independent has reached out to the Texas GOP for comment; initial details about Paige's size and ownership were reported by the New York Post and the handler's website.

Whether viewed as a humorous, unscripted moment or a troubling example of using live animals for spectacle, the incident renewed debate about animal treatment and quickly overshadowed elements of the convention it was intended to augment.
