An 18-year-old woman, identified as Aubrey Phillips of Athens, died after an SUV she was riding in rolled over in Douglas County on May 24. The Georgia Department of Public Safety confirmed Phillips suffered fatal injuries; officials say the crash report is not yet complete and the incident remains under investigation.

Family members told ABC affiliate WSB that Phillips was traveling in an SUV with her 4-month-old daughter, the child’s grandmother and the child’s aunt when their vehicle struck a moving truck near the intersection of Thornton Road and Waterway Circle. An attorney for the family said the SUV flipped four times during the collision.

Phillips died from injuries sustained in the wreck. The baby’s grandmother and aunt suffered major injuries, according to family statements. The infant, however, emerged uninjured and was still secured in her car seat after the crash.

“Her mother was big on car seat. Making sure she was strapped in,” Phillips’ mother, Florence Scott, told WSB, noting her daughter prioritized the baby’s safety.

Scott said the women were spending a girls' day out over the holiday weekend when the collision occurred. She told reporters she wants answers and justice for her daughter as authorities continue their investigation.

Phillips’ brother, Michael Byrnes, launched a GoFundMe to honor his sister’s memory and help the family with expenses. In the fundraiser, he described Aubrey as “a mother, a daughter, a sister, a niece and someone deeply loved by so many people,” and called the infant’s survival “a miracle after everything that happened.”

Authorities have not released additional details. The family and investigators are seeking to determine how the collision occurred and why it proved fatal for Phillips.
