Trump Says Iran Negotiations Have Become “Boring,” Appears Out Of Step With Latest Developments

President Donald Trump told CNBC on June 1 that he “really [doesn’t] care” if negotiations to end the conflict with Iran continue, calling the talks “very boring.” His comments came as Iran announced it was withdrawing from peace talks and threatened to block the Strait of Hormuz after Israeli strikes on Hezbollah. Trump said he would call Benjamin Netanyahu and later posted an account of the call that Netanyahu publicly disputed. Trump also linked a potential drop in oil prices to an end to the conflict and urged Americans to tolerate higher costs to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon.

President Donald Trump said on June 1 that he “really [doesn’t] care” whether negotiations to end the conflict with Iran continue, adding that talks had “started to get very boring.” The remarks, made in a candid interview with CNBC’s Eamon Javers, underscore a perceived disengagement from a confrontation he previously said would be resolved quickly.

Since the clashes began on February 28, Trump repeatedly predicted a rapid end to the fighting and often suggested a ceasefire was imminent. Those predictions were repeatedly contradicted by fresh reports of violence.

At a May 27 Cabinet meeting, he said he “wouldn’t rush” a deal because Iran was “negotiating on fumes” and added that he “didn’t care about the midterms” when discussing how domestic politics influenced his decisions about the conflict.

On June 1, Iran announced it was withdrawing from peace talks and threatened to “completely block” the Strait of Hormuz in response to Israeli strikes on Iran-backed Hezbollah positions in Lebanon. In the CNBC interview, Trump said he had not been told about Iran’s decision and said he planned to call Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to ask “what’s going on with Lebanon.”

Shortly after the interview, Trump posted on Truth Social that he had a “very positive call” with Netanyahu in which the Israeli leader allegedly said “there will be no troops going to Beirut, and any troops that are on their way, have already been turned back.” Trump also stated that Hezbollah had agreed to stop shooting and that Israel would not attack them. Netanyahu promptly disputed that account on X, writing that “if Hezbollah does not cease attacking our cities and citizens — Israel will attack terror targets in Beirut” and that the IDF would continue its planned operations in southern Lebanon.

In the CNBC interview, Trump also returned to domestic concerns about gasoline prices — an issue that has weighed on his approval ratings — and predicted oil prices would fall “like a rock” once the conflict ended. He urged Americans to tolerate higher prices in the short term, saying that stopping Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon justified the cost.

Trump’s comments — expressing impatience with negotiations and appearing to be caught off guard by Iran’s announcement — have raised questions about U.S. coordination with allies and the administration’s handling of a complex regional crisis. Observers say public contradictions between the president and allied leaders can complicate diplomacy and fuel uncertainty in markets already sensitive to supply disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz.
