Authorities in Tremonton, Utah, arrested Brigham and Melinda Merrell after their 11-year-old son was found unresponsive on Sept. 21. Investigators say the father initially reported the boy as "hanging by a coaxial cable," but camera footage, medical findings and inconsistent statements raised questions about that account. The probe alleges years of abuse including food restriction, beatings and forced outdoor confinement. Brigham faces charges of child abuse homicide and child torture; Melinda is charged with child torture.

Authorities in Tremonton, Utah, have arrested Brigham Merrell and Melinda Merrell on felony charges after their 11-year-old son was found unresponsive at the family home in September. Police say the parents initially reported the child's death as a suicide, but a months-long investigation uncovered evidence investigators say points to prolonged abuse and inconsistent accounts by the father.

Incident Overview

Officers responded on Sept. 21 to a report of an unresponsive child. First responders administered lifesaving measures and transported the boy to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Police have not released the child’s name to protect the family's privacy, and a related GoFundMe page was removed.

What Investigators Say

According to a probable cause affidavit obtained by PEOPLE, Brigham Merrell told a 911 dispatcher he had found the boy "hanging by a coaxial cable" and indicated the child had died by suicide. Investigators say interior camera footage shows the father moving the child upstairs and passing a door where emergency personnel were actively knocking. Responding officers reported that, contrary to Brigham’s claim that he was performing CPR, he was found kneeling beside the victim and not actively administering chest compressions.

An arrest report states the child had bruising on his back that investigators say was inconsistent with death by hanging and likely occurred immediately before or during the fatal event. Police also say Brigham provided conflicting accounts over several interviews.

Allegations of Longstanding Abuse

The affidavit alleges a pattern of ongoing physical abuse affecting the deceased child and other children in the household. Allegations include restricted access to food, corporal punishment using belts and pans, and forcing children to stay in an outdoor dog run as punishment. These claims remain allegations under the law and are subject to prosecution and court adjudication.

Charges And Next Steps

On May 7, authorities announced arrests in the case. Brigham Merrell has been charged with child abuse homicide and child torture; Melinda Merrell faces a charge of child torture. It was not immediately clear whether either defendant has entered a plea or retained legal counsel to speak on their behalf.

Legal Note: The charges reported are allegations. Defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
