A West Virginia man has been arrested after authorities say he shot his father in the face with a crossbow following an argument, leaving the victim with severe but survivable injuries.

The Jackson County Sheriff's Department says the incident occurred on March 17. Deputies allege that 27-year-old Chase Fleming traveled to his father's home after a phone dispute and the argument escalated in person. Fleming was later taken into custody and charged with one count of malicious assault.

Injuries and Medical Condition
The sheriff's office and local media report the crossbow bolt entered just below the victim's left eye and exited through the back of his head. The victim was transported to a nearby hospital and is listed in stable condition.

Arrest and Investigation
Authorities say Fleming fled on foot after the incident and was captured following a snowy foot pursuit that crossed two counties. He was taken to a hospital for observation while deputies worked to have him medically cleared for incarceration. Online court records reviewed by news outlets indicate bond was set at $250,000 on March 19, and Fleming is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on March 25. It was not immediately clear whether he has entered a plea or retained an attorney.

“How the guy is still alive is beyond me, it’s really remarkable,” Sheriff Ross Mellinger told local media.

The Jackson County Sheriff's Department handled the investigation. Officials have not released additional details about the circumstances that led to the confrontation or whether further charges may be filed.
