Keir Starmer and Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed a UK–Ukraine defence partnership in London that pairs Ukraine’s drone-interception expertise with UK manufacturing to counter low-cost, high-tech battlefield threats. The leaders warned that the recent escalation in the Middle East risks diverting international attention and critical defence supplies from Ukraine. Diplomacy continues — with Turkiye offering to host new talks — while fighting across Ukraine, including large drone barrages and strikes in Odesa and Zaporizhzhia, highlights ongoing security needs.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met British Prime Minister Keir Starmer in London on Tuesday to sign a new defence partnership and warn that the recent escalation in the Middle East risks diverting global attention and resources from Russia’s war in Ukraine.

Starmer greeted Zelenskyy at his official Downing Street residence and stressed that “the focus must remain on Ukraine,” following moves by some countries to ease energy-related restrictions as they sought to stabilise global oil markets after attacks linked to Iran.

Partnership Focuses On Drones And Rapid Innovation

According to the Prime Minister’s office, the defence pact will pair Ukraine’s battlefield-proven expertise in high-tech drone interception with the UK’s industrial capability to manufacture and supply defensive systems. The agreement aims to strengthen global defensive capacity against the proliferation of low-cost, advanced military hardware.

“Drones, electronic warfare and rapid battlefield innovation are now central to national and economic security, and that has only been further magnified by the conflict in the Middle East,” Starmer said in a statement.

Zelenskyy said on X that “our priorities are clear — more security and opportunities for Ukraine,” as he arrived in London ahead of a scheduled trip to Spain.

Diplomacy, Regional Offers And Shifting Priorities

The Prime Minister’s office said senior international partners, including Dutch leader Mark Rutte, were to join discussions on peacemaking efforts and the need to maintain sanctions pressure on Russia. Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan also spoke by phone with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, reiterating Turkiye’s readiness to host another round of talks between Moscow and Kyiv.

Analysts say peace negotiations brokered by the US and others have lost momentum as attention shifts to the Middle East. Observers also warn that the conflict there is straining stocks of US air-defence missiles that Kyiv needs to counter Russian missile attacks.

On The Ground: Attacks, Counterattacks And Air Defences

Zelenskyy said Ukrainian counterattacks in eastern and southern sectors had disrupted Moscow’s plans for a March offensive; independent verification is limited, but the Institute for the Study of War said Ukrainian counterattacks “are likely constraining” some Russian operations.

Overnight, Ukraine’s air force reported that Russia launched 178 long-range drones of various types across the country, of which 154 were intercepted or jammed and 22 struck their targets. In the Odesa region a Russian strike damaged industrial, port and energy infrastructure; Governor Oleh Kiper said fires were quickly extinguished and there were no casualties.

In Zaporizhzhia, a strike damaged a terminal belonging to Nova Poshta, Ukraine’s largest private delivery company; regional governor Ivan Fedorov said eight people were wounded.

Russia’s Defence Ministry said its air defences intercepted and destroyed 206 Ukrainian drones overnight over Russian regions, annexed Crimea and the Azov Sea, adding that 40 of those drones had been heading toward Moscow. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov characterised recent Ukrainian drone activity on Moscow as “absolutely futile resistance.”

Ukrainian Expertise Exported To The Middle East

Zelenskyy highlighted that more than 200 Ukrainian experts are reportedly deployed in the Middle East to help countries counter threats from Iranian drones — a capability Kyiv hopes will help it secure additional, costly air-defence systems needed to defend against Russian ballistic missiles.
