Drone debris struck Kyiv's Maidan square during Monday morning rush hour as air-defence units intercepted the bulk of a large drone salvo. Ukrainian forces say they shot down 194 of 211 drones launched overnight. Three people were killed elsewhere in Ukraine — one in Zaporizhzhia and two in Dnipropetrovsk — while Kharkiv reported injuries and transport damage. Moscow also said its defences downed around 250 drones amid rising regional tensions that have complicated diplomatic efforts.

Drone debris landed on the historic Maidan square in central Kyiv early Monday as explosions echoed across the capital during a rare daytime Russian attack, AFP journalists reported.

The Ukrainian Air Force described the morning barrage as an "unusual" strike using "various types of strike drones," and said air-defence units intercepted 194 of the 211 drones launched overnight and into Monday.

Local officials confirmed three deaths from the attacks that spanned the country overnight: one person in Zaporizhzhia and two in Dnipropetrovsk. Authorities also reported multiple injuries and damage to civilian infrastructure.

AFP reporters on the ground observed charred drone fragments and blackened paving on Maidan — the square where pro-democracy demonstrations more than a decade ago helped topple a pro-Kremlin government and preceded the full-scale invasion in 2022. Kyiv officials did not immediately identify the drone type that struck the square.

The mayor of Kyiv said debris fell in two city districts but initially reported no casualties there before the air alert ended. Residents described flashes and plumes of smoke as they sought cover during the morning commute.

Regional Impact

In Ukraine's northeast, Kharkiv was also struck, leaving three people wounded and causing damage to transport infrastructure as commuters sheltered. Zaporizhzhia officials said one woman was killed and three people were wounded; a teenage girl and a woman with a disability were reported trapped under rubble. In Dnipropetrovsk, rescuers recovered the bodies of two people and the regional governor said seven others were injured, including three children.

The Ukrainian Air Force warned of a "high-speed target" aimed at Kyiv and said the port city of Odesa was also targeted during the operation.

Cross-Border Tensions

Russian authorities said Moscow had faced reciprocal drone incursions in recent days. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said Russian air-defence systems had intercepted roughly 250 drones as they approached the capital.

Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, launched in February 2022, has produced Europe's deadliest conflict since World War II, displacing millions and causing heavy military and civilian casualties on both sides.

The latest barrage comes amid strained diplomatic efforts to bring Kyiv and Moscow to negotiations, which officials say have been complicated by broader regional tensions related to the Israel‑Iran conflict and other geopolitical pressures.

Casualty Summary: 3 confirmed dead (Zaporizhzhia: 1; Dnipropetrovsk: 2), multiple wounded including children, and infrastructure damage reported in Kharkiv and other regions.
