U.S. Airstrikes Hit Kharg Island; Trump Warns Iran Not To Block Strait Of Hormuz

President Trump announced U.S. airstrikes on Iran's Kharg Island, saying military targets were hit while oil facilities were deliberately spared. He warned Iran not to obstruct shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and said the U.S. may deploy the Navy to escort merchant vessels. Kharg processes roughly 90% of Iran's crude, so damage to its facilities could severely harm Iran's economy and global energy markets. The strikes and the explicit threat to oil infrastructure mark a notable escalation in efforts to keep the strait open.

President Trump announced that U.S. forces carried out heavy airstrikes on Iran's Kharg Island while intentionally sparing vital oil infrastructure, and warned Tehran against interfering with shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.

“I have chosen NOT to wipe out the Oil Infrastructure on the Island,” Trump wrote on social media. “However, should Iran, or anyone else, do anything to interfere with the Free and Safe Passage of Ships through the Strait of Hormuz, I will immediately reconsider this decision.”

According to the administration, the strikes targeted military assets on Kharg, a roughly five-mile island that hosts Iran's most important oil-processing complex. Officials described the operation as one of the most powerful bombing raids in the region's recent history, emphasizing that the oil facilities were deliberately left intact.

Why Kharg Island Matters

Kharg's processing plants are a cornerstone of Iran's petroleum sector: roughly 90% of Iran's crude is processed there, and significant damage to those facilities would threaten the country's economic lifelines and regional energy supplies.

Strategic Implications

Officials have not provided a detailed strategic rationale for selecting Kharg as a target, and analysts say the strikes — together with the public warning about oil infrastructure — represent a marked escalation in U.S. efforts to keep the Strait of Hormuz open. The strait is a critical chokepoint for global oil shipments, and any disruption can have wide-reaching market and geopolitical effects.

Trump also indicated the United States could deploy the Navy to escort commercial vessels through the critical waterway after Iranian actions reportedly led to the effective closure of parts of the strait amid the conflict.

International responses and the longer-term diplomatic and economic consequences remain uncertain. Observers caution that further attacks on energy infrastructure could intensify tensions and trigger broader regional instability.
