The conflict in the Middle East intensified on Friday with multiple deadly incidents and broad military activity. A US KC-135 tanker crashed in western Iraq, killing four crew members, while Tehran was rocked by major explosions near a pro-government rally. Israel reported strikes on more than 200 targets in Iran, and Gulf states intercepted dozens of drones, with damage reported in Dubai and casualties in Oman. Tensions remain high as regional actors exchange strikes and warnings.

Here are the latest verified developments in the Middle East conflict as of Friday. The situation continued to escalate across multiple fronts, with aviation and drone incidents, large-scale strikes, and rising fears of wider regional confrontation.

US Crew Killed — Four of six crew members aboard a KC-135 aerial refuelling tanker were confirmed dead after the aircraft crashed in western Iraq, the US military said. US Central Command (CENTCOM) said rescue operations were ongoing and added the loss "was not due to hostile fire or friendly fire." A second plane involved in the incident landed safely.

Iraq Kidnapping Warning — The US embassy in Baghdad warned of an elevated "risk of kidnapping" for US citizens in Iraq, saying Iran and Iran-aligned militant groups pose a significant threat and that American interests and infrastructure have been targeted.

Massive Blasts in Tehran — Iranian state television reported powerful explosions shook Tehran, close to the site of a pro-government demonstration. Earlier, the Israeli military posted maps on its Persian-language X account and urged evacuations in Villa and Moniriyeh, saying it planned strikes there. The blasts followed intense detonations that hit residences of AFP journalists in different parts of the capital.

Israel Says It Struck 200+ Targets in Iran — The Israeli military reported hitting more than 200 targets in western and central Iran over the past day, including missile launchers and air-defence systems, as the two countries continued reciprocal strikes.

Regional Drone and Missile Activity — Saudi Arabia reported intercepting dozens of drones entering its airspace, with officials saying 12 were destroyed after entry and at least 16 others were also shot down. Oman said two people died after security forces intercepted a drone near an industrial area in the north. Debris from an intercepted attack struck a building in central Dubai, and explosions rattled parts of the city.

Beirut and Lebanon — An Israeli strike in Beirut hit a member of the Iran-backed group Hezbollah, the Israeli military said, and Israel continued strikes in the Lebanese capital while warning it could expand operations and seize territory if Hezbollah did not stop attacks.

Sri Lanka to Repatriate Remains — Sri Lanka announced plans to repatriate the remains of 84 Iranian sailors killed when their frigate sank off Sri Lankan waters on March 4; Sri Lankan officials said 32 survivors who were rescued will remain in the country.

French Soldier Killed — President Emmanuel Macron confirmed a French soldier was killed in an attack in Iraq's autonomous Kurdistan region, the first French military casualty reported in the conflict. The area hosts foreign forces that have come under repeated attacks attributed to pro‑Iranian factions.

Iranian Leadership and Vows of Revenge — Iran's new supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, whose family members were reported killed in earlier strikes, vowed to avenge Iranian casualties, according to a state television statement. Iranian state media and some officials have also said he was wounded; his exact condition and whereabouts remain unclear.

Outlook — The conflict shows signs of widening, with sustained air, missile and drone activity and growing civilian risks across the Gulf and Levant. Diplomats and security services in the region are on high alert.
