Fact Check: Variety Did Not Report Ian Miles Cheong Killed In Dubai — Viral Claim False
Lead Stories says: He's Alive

Summary: A circulating X post on March 2, 2026 falsely claimed that Variety reported Ian Miles Cheong was killed by an Iranian missile in Dubai. Variety has only one article mentioning Cheong published on Oct. 2, 2025, months earlier. Cheong posted videos on March 3, 2026 showing him alive at the Dubai Mall, disproving the viral claim.

Verdict: False. Entertainment magazine Variety did not report that Ian Miles Cheong was killed by an Iranian missile in Dubai.

This viral claim circulated on X (formerly Twitter) on March 2, 2026, but documentary evidence and direct video posts from Cheong contradict it.

What We Checked

- A search of Variety’s website and archives shows no story reporting Cheong’s death. The only Variety article that mentions Cheong was published on Oct. 2, 2025 — about five months before the March 2026 posts that spread the false claim.

- Ian Miles Cheong posted a video to his X account on March 3, 2026 showing himself walking through the Dubai Mall and saying, “Things are alive and well in Dubai…” He later corrected a misspoken date in a follow-up video, confirming the clip was recorded on March 3.

Context

On Feb. 28, 2026, a military operation by the United States and Israel killed Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Iran responded with drone and missile strikes against U.S. and allied targets in the region, including attacks that affected parts of Dubai. That volatile context made it easier for false casualty claims to spread quickly on social platforms.

Why This Claim Is False

- Timing: The lone Variety mention of Cheong predates the March 2026 events and therefore cannot be the source of a report of his death.

- Direct evidence: Cheong’s own video posts from March 3, 2026 show him alive and in Dubai after the attacks. These posts provide clear visual evidence that contradicts the viral claim.

Bottom Line

The viral X post attributing Cheong’s death to a Variety report is false. No Variety article reports his death, and Cheong’s March 3 videos show he was alive in Dubai after the attack.
