Leicestershire Police have confirmed that remains found in October are those of Malgorzata Wnuczek, who vanished on 31 May 2006 after boarding a bus following a shift at Peter Jackson Logistics. Forensic testing produced a positive identification and a report will be prepared for the coroner. Officers continue to liaise with KWP Bydgoszcz in Poland, offer support to the family and are keeping the investigation open while urging anyone with information to come forward.

Leicestershire Police have confirmed that human remains discovered in October have been positively identified as Malgorzata Wnuczek, a Polish woman who went missing 19 years ago.

Wnuczek, then 27, was last heard from on 31 May 2006 when she sent a text to her family and boarded a bus after finishing a shift at Peter Jackson Logistics. Officers located remains in scrubland off the Great Central Way, near Watkin Road, in October and submitted them for forensic analysis. This week authorities announced the results confirmed her identity.

Ongoing Investigation and Family Support

Detective Superintendent Jenni Greenway, the senior investigating officer, said police remain in contact with Ms Wnuczek’s family and are offering support while asking that their privacy be respected as inquiries continue. A formal report will be prepared for the coroner.

"I would like to express my deepest condolences to Malgorzata’s family," Detective Superintendent Greenway said. "While this news ends nearly 20 years of uncertainty about Malgorzata’s whereabouts, it will not erase the family’s grief."

Leicestershire Police confirmed they are liaising with KWP Bydgoszcz in Poland and thanked their colleagues there for ongoing assistance. The investigation remains open as officers work to establish the full circumstances surrounding Ms Wnuczek’s death.

Earlier Inquiries and Recent Developments

In June 2023, after information from Polish authorities was passed to the East Midlands Special Operations Unit (EMSOU), multi-day searches of the River Soar were conducted between Mill Lane and Upperton Road. During that phase of enquiries a 39-year-old man was arrested in the Greater Manchester area on suspicion of assisting an offender and perverting the course of justice; he was later released.

Anyone with information about Ms Wnuczek’s disappearance or the current investigation is urged to contact Leicestershire Police.
