Poland has reported that a Russian military helicopter briefly entered its airspace on Wednesday morning, prompting the NATO member to scramble fighter jets and put ground forces on heightened alert.
The Polish military identified the aircraft as an Mi-8 and said it crossed the border from the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad at 11:08 local time (09:08 GMT). According to the statement, the helicopter penetrated Polish airspace to a depth of roughly 300 metres (about 328 yards) and remained inside Polish territory for approximately 42 seconds north of Braniewo. The incursion was tracked on radar.
'The nature of the incident indicates that Russia is once again testing the readiness of our air defence,' the Polish Army Operational Command said.
Moscow did not immediately comment on the claim. Poland and other European NATO members have warned recently that Russia may be probing allied responses amid the wider war in Ukraine — a charge the Kremlin denies. Russian President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly said Moscow does not plan to attack NATO countries. Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov this month said Europe was 'constantly talking about preparing for war' and warned that an attack on Russia would lead to a very different and short conflict.

The helicopter incursion comes amid what Western officials describe as a growing campaign of 'hybrid' actions — including suspected sabotage, cyberattacks, and drone strikes — across Europe.
