Responding officers pronounced the man dead at the scene after receiving a report that a person had been found hanging outdoors. The Prince George's County Police Department opened a death investigation; detectives interviewed witnesses and collected evidence on site. The county medical examiner removed the body for an autopsy as part of the inquiry.

"I also recognize the fear and pain this incident has caused, particularly given the painful history associated with the image of a Black man hanging from a tree," Councilmember Wala Blegay said in a statement to the Washington Informer. "The community deserves a thorough investigation and transparency as the facts develop."
Officials' Response
County Executive Aisha Braveboy and Police Chief Nader joined a community call Monday to answer residents' questions and to outline resources for people experiencing mental health challenges. Officials encouraged anyone in crisis to seek help and said they would continue to provide updates as investigators and the medical examiner complete their work.
