Tammy Sandhu, a 44-year-old Leicester native, has been appointed the United Kingdom's ambassador to Vatican City, becoming the first woman from an ethnic minority background to hold the post. A career diplomat with 20 years' service, Sandhu's overseas postings include Rabat, Brussels, San Francisco and Chennai.
After spending the past year learning Italian, she has relocated to Rome and is embracing its culture, cuisine and hospitality — though she admits she still misses a proper Leicester curry. Sandhu says her "truly multicultural" upbringing in Leicester and her parents' immigrant story gave her the natural ability to connect across cultures.
"My parents' story lives in me. Leicester is still very much my home. It is truly multicultural, multi-ethnic and multi-faith, and the fact that it's a city where different people live so harmoniously gives me the ability to connect across cultures," she said.
Her parents emigrated from Punjab in the 1960s. They began working on market stalls and later built a successful family business selling household goods and manufacturing curtains and bedding. Sandhu credits that background, and growing up in one of the UK's most diverse cities, with preparing her for a diplomatic career.
Although Vatican City is the smallest sovereign state in the world, the role carries significant global importance because of the Catholic Church's moral influence and extensive worldwide networks, which touch an estimated 1.4 billion people. Sandhu noted that ambassadors manage bilateral relationships, and the Vatican's reach makes the post uniquely influential.
"It's a really unique role: the Vatican is the smallest state in the world, but its influence around the world is outsized. To be able to work with the Vatican, that has such reach, is amazing," she said.
Earlier this month Sandhu received formal accreditation from the Holy See to take up her duties as ambassador. She hopes her appointment will encourage more people from minority and working-class backgrounds to consider careers in diplomacy.
"For me, representation is not really about being the first, it's about not being the last. If by doing this I inspire one more person from Leicester to think big and dream big, that matters — that for me is gold."
