K-9 Nike Stabbed During Escondido Burglary Arrest — Released to Recover After Surgery

Nike, a six-year-old Belgian Malinois assigned to the San Diego County Sheriff's K-9 Unit, was stabbed several times in the face while helping officers subdue an armed burglary suspect during an early-morning response in Escondido, California.

What Happened

The Escondido Police Department requested K-9 assistance shortly before 12:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 5, after reports of a burglary in progress at a local business. Officers at the scene said the suspect was wielding a large stick, throwing objects and threatening personnel. Despite repeated K-9 warning commands, the individual allegedly refused to comply, and deputies deployed Nike to help restrain the suspect.

Injuries and Treatment

During the confrontation, Nike sustained multiple stab wounds to his face. His handler and other officers moved to restrain the suspect while getting the injured K-9 to safety. Nike was rushed to the Veterinary Specialty Hospital of North County in San Marcos, where veterinarians identified five lacerations and two puncture wounds. The injuries required a total of 10 stitches.

Outcome and Response

Veterinary staff reported encouraging progress, and Nike was released the next morning to recover at home with his handler. The San Diego County Sheriff's K-9 Unit described Nike as a resilient, work-driven dog and said he will receive rest and follow-up care as needed. The department expressed optimism that he will make a full recovery.

The suspect was arrested and later charged with resisting arrest, second-degree burglary, property vandalism and injuring a working dog.
