Two 24-year-old friends were fatally struck by a New York City No. 4 subway train while sitting on the tracks at the Spring Street station in downtown Manhattan just after 3 a.m. on Sunday, authorities said.
What Happened
Video shared on social media shows the pair sitting on the rails moments before the train made contact. According to an incident report obtained by local press, the train operator saw the man and woman on the track and attempted to engage the emergency brake, but the train was unable to stop in time.

Investigators say the operator reported that the woman appeared to be laughing and pulled the man toward her as the train approached. Emergency responders found both victims beneath the train and pronounced them dead at the scene.

Authorities are investigating how the two came to be on the tracks. Investigators are examining toxicology results and witness statements to determine whether intoxication played a role. No suicide note has been found, and while suicide has not been ruled out, officials have not confirmed intent.
