Who Was 'El Piturris'? Mexican Influencer Shot Dead At His Family Taco Stand

José Luis Esparza Güicho, better known as 'El Piturris,' was a 37-year-old Mexican influencer and co-host of the podcast La Guarida. He was shot dead at his family's longtime taco restaurant, Los Güichos, in downtown Ciudad Obregón, Sonora.

Nickname, Persona and Rise Online

The nickname 'El Piturris' came from a childhood anecdote: Esparza's father, drunk one night, tried to call him by the name of a popular TV character and slurred it into 'Piturris.' Producer Luis Antonio Escalante told CNN that the family turned the slip into a lasting nickname. Decades later, the name became the persona he used online and on his podcast.

Esparza built a warm, relatable presence on social media, sharing family photos, humorous clips, banda music performances and scenes from his daily life. By the time of his death he had about 130,000 combined followers on Facebook and Instagram. La Guarida, launched one year earlier, reached large audiences as well: the most recent episode featuring Esparza and co-host Luis Alberto 'Huicho' González had more than 34,000 views.

Shooting and Ongoing Investigation

On Thursday morning an armed man entered Los Güichos and fatally shot Esparza before fleeing on a motorcycle with another person, the Sonora Attorney General's Office said. Authorities later said they were investigating whether the killing was linked to a Wednesday homicide in the nearby town of Cócorit. That earlier victim was described by investigators as a relative of Esparza by marriage and was alleged to have written songs for a criminal organization.

'Based on this information, one of the main lines of investigation is that the homicide may be related to a confrontation between criminal groups linked to drug trafficking,' the Attorney General's Office said, adding that inquiries are ongoing to determine who was responsible and how they were involved.

Reaction, Pause And Memorial

Producer Luis Antonio Escalante said the La Guarida team would pause activities so they could grieve. 'What we did was spread joy, and we need to heal and be well before we can continue our work,' he said, recalling Esparza's signature closing line: 'Keep your spirits up.'

A memorial Mass was held on Friday. Friends and colleagues remembered Esparza as outgoing, easygoing and someone who told true, everyday stories that resonated with listeners. He was a father to a young son and continued to work at the family restaurant even as his online following grew.

Context

Esparza's killing is part of a troubling pattern of violence affecting social media personalities in Mexico over recent years. There is no central official tally, but media counts note multiple influencer killings across states including Sinaloa, Baja California, Jalisco and Morelos. Authorities continue to investigate motives and any links to organized crime.
